I just went cross country skiing first time this winter. There's not quite enough snow yet for decent tracks but it's still great fun and good exercise. The gorgeous sunny and frigid weather is a bonus.

Sure we could stay active, but its from clippers and waves of LP. Take a look at the updated Water Vapor map... Not only have the waters in the Pacific cooled off to La Nina conditions (doesn't help tropical convection) but it has dry air PLUS dry arctic air east of Texas to overcome.

Sub tropical jet is not looking good! There's a bulk of moisture but it has to deal with everything I just mentioned

What? The polar vortex needs to be closer to us to get very cold weather.

I think you might want the Alaskan ridge to break down. Then the North American jet would flatten out possibly causing it to buckle closer to Europe. The signal that may cause cold in Europe would be a negative AO. This is true for North America as well, but the EPO (Eastern Pacific Oscillation) might be just as important. As long as you have that ridge in Alaska..... Bastardi says "pump the ridge over Alaska, open the fridge" for the eastern US.

Current EPO and AO ensembles
