It looks like this air mass will be around longer than last year's. The forecast calls for another couple of -20s nights and none above zero until Monday when we break back into the +single numbers.

Here's something else I found kinda interesting that is more wind-related.

I understand the wind chill on Mt. Mansfield was over 60 below yesterday. A little chilly I suppose.

I'll honestly take dry subzero temps over wet 30 degree temps.

It was wicked nasty in Derby tonight where there's a clean shot to Jay Peak some 20 miles to the west. Snow blowing all around and generally looking/feeling like the arctic. I'd say the wind was well over 15 MPH. More like 25-35.

One of the reasons for the extreme cold and little snow is the lack of cloud cover. The cloud cover usually helps to insulate the earth. Without cloud cover all the earths heat escapes into space. Even with cloud cover and below zero temps, there is will be less snow because the water vapor level drops as the temperature drops. The weather pattern that is coming our way by Monday is a great example of this. We are going to get more cloud cover with increased temps (mid 30's to mid 40's) and the water vapor content of the air will be high from this. We are going to get precipitation Monday, but most of it looks like it will be rain.
This is why the arctic only get 5-40 inches of snow/year. This goes along the old New England saying of "It's too cold to snow." I thought this was useful information to share. The reason this is so important to look at is also tied into our global warming. Many people think there is little to worry about because if you look at some of the big snowstorms we have had in the past five years it doesn't seem warmer temps are effecting us. The reality is when temps are closer to freezing (32 degrees), we will have heavier snows (because of the water vapor content in the atmosphere). Within a decade, what can happen is this could all be rain and very little snow, because the temps will mostly be above freezing (if you look and believe the climatologists).
