Northern VT Saturday.

Sunday bigger storm passes to north and more widespread snows throughout the state but GFS keeps it scattered.

Current "Wind Chill". Feels like the single digits all day. Just like January should feel. lol

The Polar air is sitting just north over the border. Wel below zero wind chills! Next week it drops down.

Snow coming for Northern VT tonight/tomorrow morning too. Nothing major, but it's always nice to get a couple inches here and there!

I agree. I'l take a couple inches here and there. But The worst is when we get 6" and it melts days later. lol So far I've had 3 times where I had grass to snow cover. Which means it melted throughout the weeks. We got 2" the other day and Grass is now showing. lol So probably a 4th time coming.

We got another one coming here Tuesday and then maybe a bigger one Friday.

MAd River Glen had to close--no snowmaking above the base area and there is just not enough snow on the mountain. They are saying they picked up 3-4" and then 1-3" since mid week. I'd give it an honest 4-5". They are saying they need a solid 6" additional to open the mountain back up.

Without getting into technicals. The Stratosphere has had significant and impressive warming. Not only are we way above normal but we are smashing record warm temps in such a short time period. In fact the stratosphere temps are where they should be in April, not January!

What does this all mean in simple terms? Basically it displaces the polar vortex from the poles. Sometimes going to Europe, sometimes to Asia, but signs are pointing to a North America placement.

Arctic air is coming. The question will be how long it stays.

With all that said, here's Thursday morning temps based on the latest GFS model.

These are surface temps without wind.

Normal low is generally around 11°F

Cold temps are one thing, without any damn moisture or significant snowfall we have another lost winter season for the VAST system. We got about 5" of fluff Friday night, but it shrank to a bit of nothing with the sun and warm temps today. Going to be fridgid with nothing in sight for snow this week from what I can tell. Wood will be burned, snow will be hoped for.......

I think the NEK will see some decent snowfall within the next 7-10 days. Long range is a coin flip as the models have been all over the place. With a decent snowpack in place it prevents the ground from freezing at a lower depth. Snow is a great insulator.
