Houston's roads are superb...on the major freeways/tollways & in downtown anyways. A lot of the others could use some work.

The last time I was down there a few months ago Post Oak in Uptown was getting completed gutted & repaved. Talk about a traffic nightmare!

I haven't been to Houston in a few years, but the roads can't be any worse than Dallas's. My beautiful new car is already rattling.

I think the roads in Dallas are worse. I think the roads here are awesome for the traffic it covers

I thought the roads in Houston were bad (not all of them, but a lot of them) because of the weather; H-Town gets so much more rain than Dallas. The rain takes its toll on the road surfaces, and they need repair more often.

At least that's what the Houston residents told me when I lived there...

Rain doesn't deteriorate roads, wear & tear from heavy vehicles, & severe temperature changes does.

It freezes & gets hot a lot more in Dallas than it does down in Houston.

Also, Houston uses 100% concrete on all its roads Vs. asphalt like a lot of the roads in Dallas.

it is not, but the asphalt degrades quicker.

You don't know anything

It’s Time For Climate-Friendly Concrete Roads » INFRASTRUCTURIST

"We’ll take the opportunity to pick sides a bit and say we prefer using concrete whenever possible. Yes, it’s bumpy and loud to drive on and the initial construction costs have historically been a lot higher. But it’s also light of shade — that is, it absorbs a lot less heat. New concrete has an albedo as high as 0.80 (http://74.125.47.132/search?q=cache:qrAZdPo28bEJ:www.acpa.org/Downloads/RT/RT3.05.pdf+concrete+albedo&cd=5&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=u s&client=firefox-a - broken link) (meaning it reflects about 80 percent of the sun’s heat). New asphalt has an albedo as low as 0.05 (it absorbs 95 percent). That’s a *huge* difference — greater, in fact, than the difference between snow and seawater."

http://sixbagmix.com/concrete_asphalt.htm (broken link)

"The major factor considered in the design of rigid pavements is the structural strength of the concrete. For this reason, minor variations in subgrade strength have little influence upon the structural capacity of the pavement. The major factor considered in the design of flexible pavements is the combined strength of the layers. One further practical distinction between concrete pavement and asphalt pavement is that concrete pavement provides opportunities to reinforce, texture, color and otherwise enhance a pavement, that is not possible with asphalt. These opportunities allow concrete to be made exceedingly strong, long lasting, safe, quiet, and architecturally beautiful. Concrete pavements on average outlast asphalt pavements by 10-15 years before needing rehabilitation."
