https://twitter.com/thehowie/status/1485628420528738308

"Florida update

Hospital census (10,794) up 1%; down 4% on week.
ICU census (1566) up 6%; up 4% on week.

Consistent with plateauing/peak.

Expecting larger declines this week."

"Given the holiday last weekend, likely a larger than normal dip in weekend reporting, not going to read too much into ICU figures being up week over week

Tue & especially Wed will be the more accurate comparison days"

And unlike the so-called "deltacron" variant that turned out not be real (because it was due to contamination during sequencing) - BA.2 is definitively real. However the question that scientists are currently debating is how much of a problem BA.2 might cause.

I've been reading that it could be slightly more transmissible than BA.1 (the original Omicron variant) but not any more virulent. What's a bit troubling is that some scientists are saying that people recently infected with BA.1 are vulnerable to reinfection with BA.2. If true this could prolong the Omicron wave.

This still needs to be studied further to draw definitive conclusions. I'll post some links with good information for people that want to read more about it.

UK designates Omicron sub-lineage BA.2 as 'variant under investigation'

"As its been getting increasing attention recently, I'm going to write a short thread on what we currently know about BA.2.
-what is BA.2?
-what is BA.2 doing currently?
-Should we be concerned about it?"

----------------------------------------------------

The following is a good thread on GitHub because a lot of scientists/experts chime in about BA.2 giving stats and their opinions:

https://github.com/cov-lineages/pang...ion/issues/390
I'm continuing to keep a close eye on this BA.2 subvariant. IMO it's not likely to cause a major new wave in the USA - however it could slow down the decline of the current Omicron wave. What's concerning to me is that BA.2 is currently spreading fast in Denmark & the UK. Denmark & the UK turned out to be good leading indicators (by several weeks) of what transpired in the USA with the original Omicron strain (BA.1).

I'll post some new relevant information that I came across today.

As of this morning, 67 BA.2 cases have been detected in the USA:

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.new...672104%3famp=1

"As of Monday, the BA.2 Omicron subtype had been detected in 10,811 sequenced tests from 49 countries and 17 US states, according to Scripps University's Outbreak.info. Outbreak.info pulls data from a well-regarded central database called the Global Initiative on Sharing Avian Influenza Data, or GISAID.

Countries with more than 100 BA.2 cases include: Denmark (8,357), India (711), the UK (607), Sweden (224), and Singapore (203). But as a percentage of cases overall, it remains low. For example, BA.2 accounts for about 0.03% of all tests sequenced in the UK, according to Outbreak info."

https://news.yahoo.com/scientists-cl...143353733.html

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Sequenced samples over >1 month showing something like 11% per day growth advantage of BA.2 over BA.1 in Denmark. The 50-50 point was 11 days ago.

Granted, there's no rule that it has to be the same elsewhere, but I don't think there's much doubt about BA.2/BA.1 in Denmark."

https://twitter.com/TWenseleers/stat...75883066101763

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

"I’m concerned about the new #BA2 sub variant of #Omicron. In the left panel, you see it is surging (light green) to almost half of all Denmark #Omicron cases—surpassing the old Omicron BA1 variant by a lot. Either it’s much faster transmission or it evades immunity even more."

" Elsewhere in the United Kingdom, while still early, #BA2 Omicron subvariant is doubling now every ~4 days right now… while every 4 days is slower than original #Omicron displacing delta every 1.5-3 days, BA2 displacing Omicron BA1 is a really bad sign."

https://twitter.com/DrEricDing/statu...10469451792388

--------------------------------------------------------------------

"BA.2 has a growth rate advantage over BA.1 of ca 0.11/day. That's quite sizeable. If it would have the same short generation time as BA.1 of 2.2 days it would imply a ca.1.3x higher transmissibility, due to higher contagiousness or immune escape."

Some things to keep in mind about the official FDOH offical Covid case count: 1) Now is snowbird season and non-residents aren't counted as cases 2) reinfections aren't counted as cases. 3) many home tests don't get counted.

Will this cause a decoupling of FL cases to hospitalizations? It's hard to say but Dr. Forman doesn't seem to think so. I'm not so sure. Also if the subvariant BA.2 spreads into FL and causes reinfections - those won't get counted as cases in FL. Just some things to keep in mind about the numbers.

https://twitter.com/thehowie/status/1485686503732883468

"Florida update

Cases down 44% for this weekend compared with last weekend.

Deaths 426 more deaths reported today. 7-day Moving average now above 100.

Peak deaths, 1/6/2022 - 80. Total deaths this wave ~1500.

Counts will be edited substantially upward as more data comes in."

Sarasota schools asking parents to consider substitute teaching

https://www.mysuncoast.com/2022/01/2...tute-teaching/

Sarasota County schools are asking parents to consider being substitute teachers.

In an Monday email to parents, Dr. Allison S. Foster, executive director of human resources for the school district, says the county needs substitutes, as well as cafeteria monitors, classroom aides, office positions and more.

“As we begin the second semester, we are reaching out to recruit parents to work as substitutes in our schools. If you normally volunteer in our schools or if you have time available, please consider working as a substitute in our district,” she wrote.

A teaching degree, or even a college degree, is not needed. A high school graduate can make $105.68 per day; a substitute with a masters degree can earn $152.09 per day, the email said.

FDA Rescinds Authorization For Covid Antibody Treatments By Regeneron, Eli Lilly

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.for...eli-lilly/amp/

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration Monday rescinded its authorization for Covid-19 monoclonal antibody treatments made by Regeneron Pharmaceuticals and Eli Lilly after those treatments proved ineffective against the omicron variant, over a month after some hospitals voluntarily decided to stop offering the drugs.

Because Regeneron’s REGEN-COV treatment and Eli Lilly’s bamlanivimab and etesevimab treatment are “highly unlikely to be active against the omicron variant,” which currently accounts for 99.5% of cases, they are no longer authorized by the FDA, Center for Drug Evaluation and Research director Dr. Patrizia Cavazzoni said in a statement.

The decision, made on the basis of new data, avoids exposing patients to side effects of the treatments, including potentially serious allergic reactions, Cavazzoni said.

Regeneron and Eli Lilly’s treatments may be re-authorized if a variant they’re effective against becomes common again, Cavazzoni said.

Thank you for your wonderful work.

Interesting that it, Regeneron is so highly promoted by our 'Governor' and is useless...like him.
