I'd love to know more about the non-vaccinated people winding up in hospitals. How old are they? How many pre-existing health conditions to they have? Weight? Race?

There was a big drop in Florida covid hospitalizations today down 742 to 10,287. FL covid ICU also had a big drop of 78 to 1464. Cases also remain in a strong downtrend. However the 7-day covid death avg. is the highest since Oct. 18th. This article sums up the day's stats nicely:

Florida COVID update: Highest seven-day death average since October

https://amp.miamiherald.com/news/cor...257777633.html

Florida on Thursday reported 27,533 additional COVID-19 cases and 628 more deaths to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, according to Miami Herald calculations of CDC data.

In the past seven days, the state has added 152 deaths, the highest seven-day death average since Oct. 18, according to Herald calculations of CDC data. In the past seven days, the state has added 29,415 cases per day on average.

In all, Florida has recorded at least 5,448,288 confirmed COVID cases and 64,635 deaths.

Of the deaths added, all but 26 — about 96% — occurred since Dec. 30, and about 71% died in the last two weeks, according to Miami Herald calculations of CDC data.

The CDC backlogs cases and deaths for Florida on Mondays and Thursdays, when multiple days in the past have their totals changed. In August, Florida began reporting cases and deaths by the “case date” and “death date” rather than the date they were logged into the system.

For those interested in reading more about the Florida death stats the following is a good thread from today:

Today's Update from Sarasota Memorial Hospital

Sarasota Memorial Hospital-Sarasota & Sarasota Memorial Hospital-Venice
COVID-19 Patient Update
Includes hospitalized patients who are positive for COVID-19 and those cleared of infection but still hospitalized at SMH facilities.

Total COVID inpatients today: 201 (206 yesterday)
COVID patients in ICU: 28 (no change from yesterday)
% Unvaccinated Inpatients*: 63% (updated weekly on Wednesdays)

* We categorize patients as “vaccinated” once they have received the required primary dose(s) of a COVID-19 vaccine and 2 weeks have passed since the final dose. At this time, we do not require that patients have booster doses to be categorized as fully vaccinated. An increase in break-through infections is expected as the Omicron variant spreads and immunity wanes among those who are high-risk and those who have not yet gotten a booster dose. COVID-19 vaccinations and booster shots are still the most effective method in preventing severe illness and hospitalization.

COVID-19 Test Results
SMH positivity rate: 18.7% (22% for week ending Jan. 21, 2022)

Cumulative COVID-19 Cases
Total number of patients treated since outbreak began.
Patient admissions: 5,811 (5,789 yesterday)
Patient deaths: 580 (578 yesterday)

Today's Florida Covid Hospitalizations

https://twitter.com/thehowie/status/1487053027001475072

"Florida (2-day update)

Hospital census (9868) down 11% from 2 days prior; 14% from week earlier.

ICU (1444) down 7% from 2 day prior; 9% from 1 week earlier.

Excellent progress. Plateau is over. Descent, hopefully swift."

"Past the peak, the two key numbers to watch IMO are admissions (rate of decline) and ICU beds (median severity)

Adult admits: 1,551
Pediatric: 81
COVID in ICU: 1,444

Wondering if we aren’t seeing a smaller MLK weekend bump for cases & now admits, slowing overall decline?"

Here are 2 interesting threads out today from experts about the BA.2 Omicron subvariant.

This one is from scientist Trevor Bedford:

https://twitter.com/trvrb/status/1487105437937721345

15/15
"This said, I would guess we'll see 21L (BA.2) create a substantially longer tail of circulation of Omicron than would have existed with just 21K (BA.1), but that it won't drive the scale of epidemics we've experienced with Omicron in January. "

-----------------------------------------------------------------

This thread is from data specialist Mike Honey:

https://twitter.com/Mike_Honey_/stat...40471876571141

"In North America, BA.2 has only been reported in Canada and the US. The frequencies to-date are very low, but growing steeply.

Here's a comparison of the growth rate of BA.2 vs BA.1, for the US.

Growth is running at 18% per day up to 18 January, so BA.2 should cross over BA.1 around 9 February."

"Florida weekly update

1,192 newly reported deaths, 170/day, approximately 40% of Delta peak: approaching/at peak?

Positive rate remains high at 23.5%.

As we reported earlier today, hospitalizations are beginning their decline."
