Thus far the Omicron subvariant BA.2 hasn't had a noticeable effect in the USA. It could be too soon and it might take a while for prior immunity from a BA.1 infection to wear off.

However as mentioned in the following tweet (see below) - the decline in Florida does seem to be slowing down a bit recently. Remember many experts predicted the Covid decline could slow down because of BA.2 - but most weren't expecting a major new upturn.

It's still a bit too early to say for sure if this recent slowdown in the FL decline is due to BA.2 - but I'll be watching the data closely this week to get a better grasp of the situation.

"Assuming that this is data reporting issues than actual extension of this outbreak, but Florida has slowed their descent in recent days.

Hospitalizations have also not dropped at nearly the rate of other high outbreak areas. (e.g., Florida down 37% from peak; NY down 60%)"

Today's Update from Sarasota Memorial Hospital

Sarasota Memorial Hospital-Sarasota & Sarasota Memorial Hospital-Venice
COVID-19 Patient Update
Includes hospitalized patients who are positive for COVID-19 and those cleared of infection but still hospitalized at SMH facilities.

Total COVID inpatients today: 154 (145 yesterday) (157 on Monday)
COVID patients in ICU: 22 (same as yesterday) (24 on Monday)
% Unvaccinated Inpatients*: 58% (updated weekly on Wednesdays)

* We categorize patients as “vaccinated” once they have received the required primary dose(s) of a COVID-19 vaccine and 2 weeks have passed since the final dose. At this time, we do not require that patients have booster doses to be categorized as fully vaccinated. An increase in break-through infections is expected as the Omicron variant spreads and immunity wanes among those who are high-risk and those who have not yet gotten a booster dose. COVID-19 vaccinations and booster shots are still the most effective method in preventing severe illness and hospitalization.

COVID-19 Test Results
SMH positivity rate: 10.8% (13.9% for week ending Jan. 28, 2022)

Cumulative COVID-19 Cases
Total number of patients treated since outbreak began.
Patient admissions: 6,110 (6,091 yesterday) (6072 on Monday)
Patient deaths: 609 (same as yesterday) (608 on Monday)

No - Covid is not like the flu.

COVID-19 takes serious toll on heart health—a full year after recovery

https://www.science.org/content/arti...after-recovery

From very early in the pandemic, it was clear that SARS-CoV-2 can damage the heart and blood vessels while people are acutely ill. Patients developed clots, heart inflammation, arrythmias, and heart failure.

Now, the first large study to assess cardiovascular outcomes 1 year after SARS-CoV-2 infection has demonstrated that the virus’ impact is often lasting. In an analysis of more than 11 million U.S. veterans’ health records, researchers found the risk of 20 different heart and vessel maladies was substantially increased in veterans who had COVID-19 1 year earlier, compared with those who didn’t. The risk rose with severity of initial disease and extended to every outcome the team examined, including heart attacks, arrhythmias, strokes, cardiac arrest, and more. Even people who never went to the hospital had more cardiovascular disease than those who were never infected.

The results are “stunning … worse than I expected, for sure,” says Eric Topol, a cardiologist at Scripps Research. “All of these are very serious disorders. … If anybody ever thought that COVID was like the flu this should be one of the most powerful data sets to point out it’s not.” He adds that the new study “may be the most impressive Long Covid paper we have seen to date.”
