This is not the CDC misleading the public - it's due to the fact that the FDOH changed the way they report deaths to the CDC. (The CDC obtains this information directly from the FDOH). I've explained this several times in previous posts.

Florida COVID update: 1,338 more fatalities. Average daily reported deaths reaches record high

https://www.bradenton.com/news/coron...253940263.html

Florida on Thursday reported 21,723 more COVID-19 cases and 1,338 additional deaths to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, according to Miami Herald calculations of CDC data.

All but 38 of the newly reported deaths, about 97%, occurred after Aug. 5, according to the Herald analysis. About 70% of the newly reported died in the past two weeks, the analysis showed. The majority of deaths happened during Florida’s latest surge in COVID-19 cases, fueled by the delta variant.

In the past seven days, on average, the state has added 325 deaths and 22,308 cases each day, according to Herald calculations of CDC data. This is a record high.

The jump in the number of reported cases and deaths is due to the newest way deaths and cases are counted. The CDC implemented the change earlier this month, causing occasional one-day aberrations like the 902 additional deaths on Monday and 901 more deaths reported Aug. 26.

In all, Florida has recorded at least 3,291,225 confirmed COVID cases statewide and 45,909 deaths.

223 Covid-19 patients hospitalized today - a decrease of 42 from yesterday's total of 265.

69 Covid-19 patients in the ICU (no change since yesterday).

4 people died from Covid-19 at SMH over the past day.

the 7-day test positivity ratio is 16.7%

unvaccinated Covid-19 patients at SMH is currently 83%

Well SMH has come out today and said that yesterday's total of 223 hospitalizations was an error.

Here's a Tweet from today summing up the current situation in Florida - from (((Howard Forman))) @thehowie

https://twitter.com/thehowie/status/1433780116061147149

Steady progress in reducing hospitalizations/ICU use (still ABOVE prior peaks).

Florida remains #1 in USA in hospitalizations per capita.

We will be getting more data today at ~1 PM regarding cases & deaths & then a weekly tally from @HealthyFla around 5 pm.

In addition to being #1 in nation in hospitalizations, Florida is #1 for deaths/capita.

Florida is also #17 (up from #26 just a month ago) in TOTAL deaths/capita during pandemic; likely to get close to #10.

In Florida, new COVID-19 cases have dipped among adults but not for people under 20

https://www.bradenton.com/news/coron...253948353.html

Over the past two weeks, Florida’s health department has reported a downturn in new cases of COVID-19 among nearly every adult age group while hospitalizations for the infectious disease also have declined — positive indicators that the state may have turned the corner on the latest wave of the pandemic.

Still, new cases and hospitalizations in Florida are at their highest since last winter, and for at least one group of Floridians, the pandemic is still surging: People under 20, who made up nearly 1 in 3 of all new COVID-19 cases during the week ending Aug. 26.

Overall, new cases among adults older than 20 were 13% lower for the week that ended Aug. 26 when compared with the week ending Aug. 12, according to the Florida Department of Health’s COVID-19 weekly situation report. But among Floridians ages 12 to 19, cases were up 45%, and for those younger than 12, cases rose a significant 58% during the same time period.

People under 20 made up nearly 1 in 3 of the 151,749 new COVID-19 cases reported in Florida for the week ending Aug. 26 compared with 1 in 5 of all new cases during the week ending Aug. 12.

Dr. Patrick Kenney, an infectious disease specialist with Cleveland Clinic Florida, said the rise in cases among young Floridians is “concerning because you know people are going back to school.”

At the University of Florida, the prospect of a full football stadium on game day brings cheers — and fears

https://www.washingtonpost.com/educa...ida-covid-fau/

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Come Saturday night, college football fans will converge on the stadium here known as the “Swamp” in numbers not seen since 2019.

For the first time since the pandemic began, the University of Florida will let up to 88,000 people into the stands to watch their beloved Gators take on Florida Atlantic in the season opener. These fans can watch the marching band actually take the field for a halftime show. They can sing Tom Petty anthem “I Won’t Back Down” between the third and fourth quarters, a recent home-game tradition honoring the late rocker from Gainesville.

They won’t have to be vaccinated and won’t have to wear masks. They will be outdoors but packed close together. This spectacle and others like it around the country are stirring passions for the resumption of a fall pastime with major cultural influence — and with it fears about what could happen next on campuses.

While recently Florida has slowly been heading in the right direction with hospitalizations and cases - IMO that doesn't mean it's time to abandon all precautions over the Labor Day weekend. We don't want to see another upturn after the Labor Day weekend.

COVID-19 surge eases in Florida, but Labor Day sparks concern

https://www.msn.com/en-us/health/med...ern/ar-AAO3NkE

Florida appears to be emerging from its worst COVID-19 surge to date, but the upcoming Labor Day weekend is sparking concerns for health experts watching the pandemic.

Although hospitalizations and new cases are declining, health experts aren’t ready to breathe a sigh of relief.

Labor Day gatherings coupled with students returning to class could send Florida’s outbreak back in the wrong direction, said Dr. Mary Jo Trepka, a public health researcher at Florida International University.

“There are a lot of things happening right now in terms of potential for transmission,” she said. “The potential is there with a lot of people coming together for the first time.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended unvaccinated Americans not travel over the holiday weekend, and Central Florida doctors are urging people to stay vigilant.

Dr. Raul Pino, director of Orange County’s health department, said he’s concerned about a possible Labor Day spike in new cases.

“Now is not the time to let our guard down as we are apparently recovering from the latest wave of the pandemic,” he said.

He said families should put special emphasis on protecting children at family gatherings.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis won't give up on his school mask mandate ban

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/fl...ban/ar-AAO4alo

- Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is appealing a court order that blocks his ban on school mask mandates.

- The state said it was going to ignore the ban and punish non-complying school districts anyways.

- The appeal "triggers an automatic stay," meaning that DeSantis' ban is temporarily law once more.

Florida’s COVID-19 case surge continued to ease after Florida reported 17,506 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 today and the 7-day trend fell to its lowest level since Aug. 3, according to data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The state is now averaging 18,436 new cases per day, potentially signaling Florida has rounded the peak of its largest COVID surge to date.
