Today's Update From Sarasota Memorial Hospital

Well good news the Covid-19 hospitalizations took a big drop at SMH over the past day. However Covid-19 ICU patients and deaths remain stubbornly high. I suspect deaths & ICU patients will eventually start to drop too because they are lagging indicators.

223 Covid-19 patients hospitalized today - a decrease of 42 from yesterday's total of 265.

69 Covid-19 patients in the ICU (no change since yesterday).

4 people died from Covid-19 at SMH over the past day.

the 7-day test positivity ratio is 16.7%

unvaccinated Covid-19 patients at SMH is currently 83%

Sarasota Schools pushes back against state efforts to prevent district mask mandate

https://www.heraldtribune.com/story/...da/5696948001/

The Sarasota County School Board's attorney is pushing back against the state Department of Education's effort to prevent the district from imposing a mask mandate.

On Thursday, the district released a letter written by Dan DeLeo, a partner with the Sarasota law firm Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick, LLP that represents the School Board.

DeLeo argues that the School Board's emergency policy falls within the parameters of the Parents' Bill of Rights.

The parental rights law has become the battlefield over mask mandates because the overall intent of the law is to specify that a parent, not the government, has ultimate decision-making authority when it comes to their children.

However, DeLeo highlighted a clause within the law makes clear government bodies cannot infringe on parental rights "without demonstrating that such action is reasonable and necessary to achieve a compelling state interest and that such action is narrowly tailored."

DeLeo goes on to argue that the district's mask mandate is necessary, citing testimony from health officials and school district leaders about rising rates of COVID-19 within schools and the increasing number of staff having to miss work for quarantine.

DeLeo also argues that the rule is narrowly tailored, pointing out that it will automatically suspend once the positivity rate for COVID-19 tests falls below 8% for three consecutive days.

More than 80% of Americans 16 and older have some immunity to coronavirus, blood survey finds

https://news.google.com/articles/CAI...S&ceid=US%3Aen

More than 80% of Americans 16 and older have some level of immunity against the coronavirus, mostly through vaccination, a survey of blood donations indicates.

The survey, led by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, also indicates that about twice as many people have been infected with the virus as have been officially counted. More than 39 million Americans have been diagnosed with coronavirus infection since the pandemic started in 2020.

The team, led by the CDC's Dr. Jefferson Jones, set out to determine how close the US might be to some kind of herd immunity -- although they do not claim to have any kind of handle on that yet.

They worked with 17 blood collection organizations working in all 50 states plus Washington, DC, and Puerto Rico to test blood covering 74% of the population. In the end, they tested about 1.4 million samples.

In July 2020, before any vaccine was available, 3.5% of samples carried antibodies to SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19. That rose to 11.5% by December, they reported in the medical journal JAMA. By May, 83.3% of samples had antibodies to the virus, most of them from vaccination.

And while in July 2020, blood surveillance indicated the US was only counting one infection out of every three true infections, that fell to one in two a year later.

This was all pre-Delta, the researchers caution. Plus, they didn't measure the other part of the human response -- one involving cells known as T-cells -- and one that might induce broader immunity. But knowing who has antibodies can help inform public health efforts.

"Several large studies have shown that among individuals who are seropositive from prior SARS-CoV-2 infection, COVID-19 incidence is reduced by 80% to 95%, similar to vaccine efficacy estimates," they noted.

"The study will continue until at least December 2021, and results will be made available on the CDC's website," they wrote.

Students relying on chiropractor for COVID mask opt-out have until Sept. 10

https://www.heraldtribune.com/story/...nt/5697776001/

Students in Sarasota County Schools who were hoping to use a chiropractor's note to opt out of having to wear a face mask have until Sept. 10 to get a new note from an approved medical professional.

On Wednesday school officials said that Dan Busch, a chiropractor at Twin Palms Chiropractic, had signed more than 500 mask exemption forms for students in the district.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

This guy just doesn't know when to quit. He claims he's not anti-mask or pro-mask - he's just for "freedom". Whatever.

"Busch says he is planning an event for Sept. 11 for approved medical providers to meet with students who want mask exemptions. There was no word yet on a time or location for the event."

So some of his other "quack" medical buddies are likely to show up at this event.
