“woke” became a marker of the not-OK Boomer, a bilious word whose meaning was more in who said it than in what it meant or mocked. In other words, Woke died. Cool young people were not sad that Woke was dead, because he was no longer their word, and mean old people were not sad because they did not know he was dead. The end.

This word now belongs to asshats like Tucker Carlsen and Donsld Trump Jr.
No, they literally identify as "woke" as that literally what was asked multiple times.

To the extent that you understand the term, do you consider yourself to be "woke"?
Is being "woke" a good thing, a bad thing, or neither?
Is "wokeness" helping the country evolve and develop for the better or is it stoking differences and causing social and political unrest?

Don't forget Obama and Bill Maher!

Doesn’t matter whether or not “woke” is self ascribed, it is still a worldview that permeates throughout our society. I personally know many liberals and I wouldn’t define them as woke. Woke is a fringe group that happens to have a big megaphone and if you’re caught on the wrong end, you’re canceled.

Not anymore, nobody but y'all says that anymore.

Just like how right wing extremists have shat all over words like 'patriot' and 'family values', everything they touch goes bad.

And it's funny how we are supposedly stoking division yet we're not the ones screaming 'civil war' every 30 seconds.

I think you need to read the article again. They use the nomenclature “woke.”

I’m not following the quote you posted at all. Sounds incoherent.

Whether or not the term “woke” now belongs to Trump or Tucker in its use for describing the “woke,” those who are “woke” earned it.

Maher has spoken several times about it this year. Obama gave an interview chastising "cancel cutlure" this year as well. More and more on the left are speaking out again "wokeness" including James Carville, CNN, etc...

It's obvious some of "y'all" don't like how the term is used as a pejorative against the left now but quit trying to pretend it's just the right speaking out against it and using the term.

Different side of the same coin. Both sides do it.

The word "woke" was coined by the Left and probably by the Academic Left. Wictionary attibutes it's coinage to African American lexicon. It is hardly something conservatives coined. They simply use it to demonstrate Leftist hypocrisy, power grab, overreach and abuse.

Definitions.

Merriam-Webster

Definition of woke (Entry 1 of 2)

chiefly US slang

: aware of and actively attentive to important facts and issues (especially issues of racial and social justice)
But we will only succeed if we reject the growing pressure to retreat into cynicism and hopelessness. … We have a moral obligation to "stay woke," take a stand and be active; challenging injustices and racism in our communities and fighting hatred and discrimination wherever it rises.

— Barbara Lee

… argued that … Brad Pitt is not only woke, but the wokest man in Hollywood … because he uses his status—and his production company Plan B—to create space for artists of color, with such films as 12 Years a Slave, Selma, and the upcoming film Moonlight.
— Giselle Defares

And I read somewhere some time back, that the origin of the term was really from the days of slavery, when slaves were known to stay up at night to teach themselves to read by candlelight.

Whatever.

Who cares about the origin? It’s used as a taunting pejorative. Which helps what?

Homo sapiens. Can’t live with ‘em. Can’t live without ‘em.
