You're knocking me for not being rigidly knee-jerk.
Those two comments were responses to two different statements. Go through the thread and look harder, you will find I have made even more comments on still different issues. None are contradictory in context, they just offer different advice to people describing different circumstances.
"I suggest A"
"Well, I can't"
"Then try B"
--- Oh, no, A and B aren't the same, he's contradicting himself!
This is what I use. I have arthritis in my hands and never had a problem using this hand held one. I have to agree with the poster about the electric can openers that sit on the counter. They are nothing but problems though, I have to say, I have had issues with the cans with the ring pulls.
This is the one I have too. Mine is a Kitchen Aide and the handles are thick and padded. Cuts great and turning the crank isn't hard. I have arthritis in my hands and I can use this one fine. Cheaper ones with no padding on the handles hurt my hands. I haven't had an electric one for 35 years and can't believe the prices they get now. My old one was avocado green!
There are similar models that store in a drawer, but I think you have to squeeze most of them.
Oh my gosh! I thought they quit making those eons ago. I grew up with one in our kitchen, it swung out to a right angle from the wall and swung back in up against the wall. 70 years ago!
I use Oxo brand stuff with rubbery grip covering on can openers and such. I have a wine bottle opener that easily lifts the cork out with just simple turning of the rubbery handle, etc. I also have some Gorilla gloves that have a rubbery palm and finger area, but are stretchy fabric overall.
I don't open many cans so I just use a manual can opener. I've never noticed that a $25.00 can opener works particularly better than a no-name $6.99 can opener. I grew up with a wall-mounted manual can opener which was how you called the cats and opened the dog food can. That morphed into a counter top electric at some point and the cats re-trained to that sound in about 2 days. In 2019, pet food has pull tabs.
I've used an electric under cabinet mounted can opener for a long time, it finally died. I went to replace it a while back and I just want to know why they are so expensive now? It's beyond ridiculous! I have trouble with my hands so I don't want a regular one. I have tried just about everything else and hate them all. IMO the new ones they offer are junk. I think today I'll get one that sits on the counter, I've been fighting that because I don't have a lot of counter space. I was talking to a group of people at our clubhouse Friday evening and they all agreed they the like space saver. One person said they thought they were going to stop making them and that's why the increase but it makes no sense....at least not to me.
Here is an inexpensive manual Can Opener which works well...
Best can opener ever! Its like giant version of the old military openers.
Thanks! I want one of these!
