Went out today for a snorkeling trip just off of Boca Grand. Rounded BG pass to the right and anchored off the beach. Visibility was really good! But man was the wind kicked up. Had some serious rollers. Pulled up anchor and cruised up to Gasparilla pass and tried to anchor there but current was too strong to swim. Went back behind the island around to Boca again but visibility decreased and waves got bigger. Decided to come back up the harbor. Today I would not have wanted a smaller boat with the size of the chop. The 27 felt very safe even at 30mph. My last boat was a 23 Stingray go fast boat. It would have gotten buried in this stuff.

And today was "light chop", at least according to the marine forecast. That's exactly why I like the 246 - no matter what kicks up, I know I can get myself and more importantly, my passengers, home comfortably. I like fishing the flats behind the bar, but don't want to be mostly limited to that all winter. Call me a chicken, but in a 2-foot washing machine chop, I want a lot of boat under me.

I agree. We also ran down to Boca this afternoon and stopped at Millers and went up the IW to Placida. Good Sw breeze coming in. Once we rounded the point heading to Boca the waves became 2/3 quickly.

Agree, two boats would be a dream scenario. Next best thing is two friends with different hulls, each understanding what it's like to take care of a boat. There's a lot of that going on here.

"The only thing better than owning a (50 ft sportfisherman, stable, race car, hunting lodge, private box at Florida Field, brewery) is having a friend who owns one"

Just two? Let's see: A flats boat for the flats, a deep vee CC for quick trips to the gulf, a sportfish for overnight gulf fishing trips, a "go fast" for that quick lunch, crab cake sandwich at (fill in the blank), a trawler for weekend get aways, ... Heck, I'd need my own marina!

Strange tide today. I stayed in because of the wind forecast. Fishing my canal now and the tide is supposed to have been coming in for the past 3 hours until 5 something but it's clearly going out as I watch. No wind to speak of on the canal now.

Same in our canal. Wind blew 20 down the harbor (against the tide) all day. The low will be really low.
