Obama spoke to the HRC this past weekend. He said that he's had some other issues to deal with being the economy, jobs etc but that he has not forgot about gay issues. Look at what happened to Clinton when he proposed equal rights for gays in the military, the wicked right went after him from that moment on. I think Obama will keep his promise. He is waiting until he accomplishes some of the tougher fights on healthcare reform and the economy.

If that's the criteria, don' ask don't tell will be around for a long time

Obama is expected to sign healthcare reform before Christmas. As far as the economy, it is recovering. The Stock Market is back near 10k. Jobs are always one of the last areas in a recession to recover.
Did you happen to watch his speech?
WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama told the nation's largest gay activist group Saturday that he would end the ban on gays serving openly in the military, while acknowledging critics in the audience who accuse him of sidelining a community that helped get him elected.
"I will end 'don't ask, don't tell,' " Obama told the annual dinner for the Human Rights Campaign. However, Obama did not give a timetable on ending the policy or the specifics that some activists have sought.
Obama said he also remains committed to expanding employment nondiscrimination policies and recognizing same-sex marriages. He applauded the House for widening hate crimes legislation to include violence based on sexual orientation.
I'd say 99.9% of the men I know enjoy that. Yes, thats considered sodomy.
I didn't understand marmac's comment until I saw the comment from Memphis1979. It sounds like marmac believes that "sodomy" only means homosexual sex, or that it means anal sex. No, sodomy includes both oral and anal sex, and it includes both homosexual and heterosexual activity. I think this misunderstanding developed over the years because sodomy laws were almost exclusively used to prosecute homosexual activity; even though most of the sodomy laws didn't specify homosexual or heterosexual, heterosexuals got a pass while homosexuals got put in jail.
I think the "don't ask don't tell" policy is good. But it might be hard for many of you to understand the reasons behind it.
These guys get deployed for months at the time and they shower together, sleep side by side in close quarters. Think about it for a second, and if you can't figure it out then you just don't get it.
It is not good for the morale of the unit.

They said the same thing about integrating black and Jews into the military.
If every other modern country can handle people being open about their sexual orientation, I have faith that American soldiers can handle it too. Maybe you think that Americans are too homophobic to be able to cope with homosexuals in their midst, but I'm confident that they can overcome it. At this point, it's really a minority who is bothered by the idea. Most young people aren't anti-gay.
And when you say it's "not good for the morale of the unit", you're really saying, "I think being anti-gay is a good thing."

You totally missed the point. Go back and read some of the other posts. They can explain it better then I can.
