Even if we place a couple hundred interceptors, Russia could easily swamp the system. So, it's not a strategic edge for NATO, its more of an irritant for Moscow. I find it funny that the armchair warriors that post on here truly believe that this system is a defense against Iran. First, Iran does not possess the technology, and second, the Russians offered us a base in south Asia for the system. So it has little do with Iran and more to do with poking a stick at Russia.....something we've done quite well since the breakup of the USSR.

Absolutely right we were trying to stick it to them and play some domestic politics and Georgia got burned.

George Washington warned us about this sort of thing just before he left office. World War 1 reinforced the fact that we DO NOT need to entangle ourselves in the affairs of anyone else.
That's what Neville Chamberlain thought too.

Nice quip! If I'm not willing to become the world's policeman, I must be Neville Chamberlain. I wonder why I never connected the dots before? Thank you for logically challenging my world view, and systematically destroying my belief system!

If it has a good ending, the UN or Europe will get the credit. If it has a bad ending, the US will get the blame.

I am from Russia. I have read all the posts here and I am really sorry for you. I only wish that some time in America will appear american Gorbachev.
I've already written in my posts that you are brainwashed.
Russia never intended to invade Georgia. How could you imagine that our soldiers would bomb cities and kill civilians? All of us love georgian people. We lived for centuries together.
And now near us, in our cities live lots of Georgians. How would we look into their eyes?
Every man in our country can name dozens and dozens of famous and beloved Georgians without hesitation.
There are a lot of mixed marriages among people of former SU. And many soldiers are also from such families. I am russian-ukrainian. My cousin is Russian-ukrainian and her husband is kasakh-tatar. Russian soldier will never kill peaceful people. And I mean not only Russian by nationality, but all soldiers of our army. You know, that among our troops were two Chechen’s battalions.

Obviously.

If was intended to defend against missiles from Iran, as is claimed, then the missiles should be put in Romania with the radar system in Bulgaria. Or better yet, put the radar system in Turkey and the missiles in either Bulgaria or Romania.

It's crystal clear. The next time you're walking down the halls of the Pentagon, just yell, "Silk Road Strategy" and everyone will know what you're talking about.

Did you read the Senate and House committee hearings? It's all right there in black and white.

I'll summarize it for you.

Congress: You didn't tell us that the Soviet Union was on the verge of collapse.

CIA: Yes, we did, repeatedly. Our NIEs for the last 6 years have warned of economic problems that could lead to collapse and those warnings became more dire over the last several months.

Congress: Oh, well, you did, but you didn't tell us the exact day, hour, minute and second the Soviet Union would collapse.

CIA: WTF?

Congress: Tell us about the new Russia.

CIA: The new Russia will break up into 8 to 10 additional states if the government fails to take certain actions to avert that, or if the government engages in certain actions that would accelerate it.

Congress: Good. We want to get our hands on the oil, natural gas, coal, timber, minerals, metal ores and agricultural lands in the eastern Russian republics. How can we help Russia break apart?

CIA: Continue with the current long term geo-strategy, push NATO to the border of Russia and gain control of Central Asia.

And he thought right. The Germans never attacked the Brits. The Brits volunteered to help Poland, mostly because the Brits viewed Germany as a potential economic threat.
