To the contrary, it's been getting easier to keep his people believing his version of events. As NATO expands its membership and also beefs up its forces and equipment, it only makes it easier to claim, that NATO is out to get Russia, i.e. that it's an aggressive organization, not a defensive one. From a Russian perspective, it looks like NATO is ganging up on Russia.
Understandable, since they and their friends ARE ganging up on Russia.
But Russia started it. It won't matter what Ukrainian border look like in the end, or even if there are Ukrainian borders. Sanctions and boycotts (let's remember they are two different things) will crush Russia, who will never be able to bully the world again.

Russia already had made such a proposal to Poland before the invasion and it was immediately rejected.
If you haven't noticed (you have though, you know ...) Poland has been the staunchest defender of Ukraine, pusing weapons into their hands as quickly as they could manage it. No country with plans to divide up it's neighbor would be arming them out of it's own capabilities.
