question: Why do Mexican drug cartels get their guns in the US?

Answer: because the US government gives them away.

I don't think that's accurate. Where do they get grenades, rocket launchers, and full auto machine guns from? Why do military supplies suddenly get "lost" in S. America.

Of course it's not accurate. The cartels use weaponry like you said, they aren't getting that from here.

Lightbulb Why do Mexican drug cartels get their guns in the US?

Fact 1: Mexican cartels are not buying machine guns from US suppliers.

Fact 2: A large portion of the cartels' weapons come from Mexican military arsenals.

Fact 3: Mexico's Draconian gun laws have done zip point nada to reduce or prevent gun violence.

fyi...

In fact, it's not even close. The fact is, only 17 percent of guns found at Mexican crime scenes have been traced to the U.S.
What's true, an ATF spokeswoman told FOXNews.com, in a clarification of the statistic used by her own agency's assistant director, "is that over 90 percent of the traced firearms originate from the U.S."
So, of the 17 percent found that are traced by Mexican authorities to the US, 90% originate here. So in fact you're looking at 15.3% (90% of 17%) that orignate here. So, saying "90% of the guns used in Mexican crime origniated in the US was another lie, told by our government. No suprise there that they would lie to enhance a policital position...nearly everything out of this administration is a lie.

What isn't stated is, of that percentage, what portion was first sold or donated by the US government to the Mexican government, and then ended up in the hands of criminals? I'd really like to see that figure.

Even more so, what percentage of automatic firearms ("machine guns"), gernade launchers or missle launchers (LAWs, etc) are made here, transfered to the Mex government and then end up in the hands of criminals? And are ANY of those ones that were legally sold to US civilians?

So, if not from the U.S., where do they come from? There are a variety of sources:
-- The Black Market. Mexico is a virtual arms bazaar, with fragmentation grenades from South Korea, AK-47s from China, and shoulder-fired rocket launchers from Spain, Israel and former Soviet bloc manufacturers.
-- Russian crime organizations. Interpol says Russian Mafia groups such as Poldolskaya and Moscow-based Solntsevskaya are actively trafficking drugs and arms in Mexico.
- South America. During the late 1990s, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) established a clandestine arms smuggling and drug trafficking partnership with the Tijuana cartel, according to the Federal Research Division report from the Library of Congress.
-- Asia. According to a 2006 Amnesty International Report, China has provided arms to countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America. Chinese assault weapons and Korean explosives have been recovered in Mexico.
-- The Mexican Army. More than 150,000 soldiers deserted in the last six years, according to Mexican Congressman Robert Badillo. Many took their weapons with them, including the standard issue M-16 assault rifle made in Belgium.
-- Guatemala. U.S. intelligence agencies say traffickers move immigrants, stolen cars, guns and drugs, including most of America's cocaine, along the porous Mexican-Guatemalan border.

I worked in Mexico a few short years ago and crossed the border daily. I can walk out into my front yard and see the border fence. I'm amused by "expert commentary" on the situation on the far side of that fence. The cartels love automatic weapons. They tend to get them from sources overseas who bring them up through Central America or from Mexican military armories. What most gringos simply have no grasp of is that many high ranking Mexican military (and police and other govt functions) officials are on the cartel payrolls. And the cartels don't tolerate failure to deliver.
