Cub Scouts are little kids, but when you get to Boy Scouts, that's a mostly teenaged group. Now think about a grown man around 15 and 16 year old girls. Every straight, grown man knows that's opening up a door to a potential problem. And gay or straight, men are men.
I'm an Eagle Scout and think openly gay men have no place in the organization. I'm also on the fence regarding women in Boy Scouts, too. (Cub scouts, different story). Call/slur me however you wish. Those of you who do that have no idea what it's about.
I also agree with others who say that a decision like this would eventually destroy the organization, and esp from a business perspective. See JCPenney.
If a grown man cannot control himself around 15 and 16 year old girls, then he has a major problem and the same goes with adult gay men around young men. Do not need to slur you one bit, but you do need to learn the difference between pedophiles and gay men, they are not the same. It is adult straight men that molest little boys and girls, blaming gay men for it does not protect the kids, it just allows the straight men to get away with it while the gay men are being accused.
Not a single one of the groups has to allow gay boys or gay young men to join, the ruling allows each group to make their own decision based on their supporters and the families of the boys. If any particular group does not want to allow gay members, then they are free to make that dicision. What the decision does is stop the organization from making a blanket decision that governs all the individual groups.
Wonder how long it will be before some of our esteemed C-D members will make it into the current century. I come to this forum whenever my view of Americans gets too positive. It's like time travel - into a past where prejudice, intimidation, discrimination, and a general lack of education were the standard.
I find it unbelievable that people like this still exist in this nation.
They will continue to exist for hundreds of years, at the very least. "Othering" has been a trait selected for throughout the violent past where survival depended upon encouraging reproduction and cooperating with one's in-group against the threats posed by out-groups. It's not going to change overnight.
A person's sexual orientation should be a private matter if the person is a good person (and not an abuser of any kind). So it really shouldn't be a problem for the scouts one way or another.

A grown man being attracted to a 15 or 16 year old (who are typically fully developed) is not a pedo. Likewise its no secret nowadays there are plenty of gay men who are into "twinks". In the same vein you have allegations against Kevin Clash, the voice of Elmo, and his teenaged boyfriend. This type of drama will be the new element introduced to the BSA of the 21st century, if it even survives after parents pull their sons out in droves.
