You have to admit that a lot of older people do still judge people based on their sexual orientation or race. Not an insult, just a fact.

A lot of people care. It's about having a representative who truly resembles you and can bring a perspective to the table from personal experience. If the entire congress was white and male, do you feel that blacks or women would be fairly represented?

the point is can he or she do the JOB...I dont care if they are male or female, gay or straight, black or white, catholic/jewish/athiest

the point should be a GOOD person was voted in, and will do the job of ALL the people...not just a few agenda minded

And the voters in these areas (I'm in Charlotte, btw, and in Mayfield's district) clearly felt that these candidates were the best for the job. Who's to say that a white male wouldn't have an agenda for all white males? Again, don't you see the fairness in having equal representation? One person on a council isn't going to make or break an issue - he or she will only bring their own, personal perspective to what should be a fair and reasonable discussion about the issue, whatever it may be.

Btw, Mayfield didn't just win, she absolutely creamed her opponent. Landslide doesn't even describe it. And she didn't run on a platform of being gay.

Eh, a gay got elected...

Big deal...

Now if a gay white supremacist was elected into office, now THAT might be newsworthy...

Why do you have to be openly straight? So you don't ever talk about your wife or girlfriend or children?

I don't want to know about what you do behind closed doors.

Who you have sex with in regards to same sex or not shouldnt affect how you interpret the law. Just because you are gay, shouldnt mean you vote for someone because they are gay or happy for someone being elected just because theyre gay.

Thats as bad as those who vote for someone because they are black or hispanic. Its just stupid.

Yep.

Just look at interracial marriages.
Record-High 86% Approve of Black-White Marriages

The east-supportive demographic is 65 years old and older.

No surprise, of course-- changes to society are generally embraced more and more by subsequent generations, no matter how upset members of earlier generations get when this is pointed out.

What's stupid is not possessing the understanding that having a diverse representation for a diverse population is right and fair.

Considering that gays and lesbians are a minority, and these folks were elected by a majority, I'd say they didn't get voted in just because they're gay.
