Isn't there rioting in the streets of Eurozone countries? Have you not noticed that Europe is moving back towards a more conservative stance? They can no longer survive under the weight of their fiscal burden and their socialist experiment is failing (as it always has). There isn't a better way to be governed than by the people.

If you live in Spain, Greece or France I'm sure you are right at home with your fellow rioters.

The worldwide financial debacle was orchestrated by the American capitalist financial robber barons with their legalized Ponzi schemes. Some of the most functional and happiest countries (like the Scandinavians, New Zealand, Australia) are the most "socialist" in that they are not so eager to sacrifice the welfare of their people on the alter of unmitigated greed. It wasn't "socialism" that failed it was American style vulture capitalism.

If you actually look at what happened in Greece and Spain, you'll find that they were too lax with their tax collection, and let people get away with not following the rules. They would have been fine otherwise. Maybe not GREAT, but fine.

The HUGE difference?

"Hatred and vitriol" on this thread from "the left" (whatever that means) is against willful IGNORANCE, bigotry and prejudice.... ALL of which are CHOSEN conditions. Don't want to experience the wrath or feel like you're being attacked? Cure the ignorance or stop being a bigot.

The hatred and vitriol lobbed against gays by "the right" (or whatever that means) is against PEOPLE... SOLDIERS... who have an immutable characteristic that is not a choice. It's a time honored tradition among "conservatives" to attack and deride anyone or anything that does not fit into the box of what is acceptable behavior, color, lifestyle, etc.

What a wonderful day for America. I applaud this move.

Here's the roll call:

All Senate Democrats voted for repeal except 1 - Manchin (D-WV) did not vote.

The 2 independent senators both voted for repeal.

7 Republican senators voted for repeal - Brown (R-MA), Burr (R-NC), Collins (R-ME), Ensign (R-NV), Kirk (R-IL), Murkowski (R-AK), Snowe (R-ME).

3 Republican senator did not vote - Bunning (R-KY), Gregg (R-NH), Hatch (R-UT).

The other 31 Republican senators voted against repeal.
Bill Clinton implimented it with an Executive order.
Anytime he wanted to without the Senate or Congress Obama could have ended it. WHy he didn't have the guts is a good question? Why did he need the cover of the House and Senate?

Miami Rob answered this question in an earlier post.

That's because people feel strongly about this, and the opinion you've expressed is seen as bigoted and anti-gay. Your view is in the minority, so it's not surprising that most posters disagree with you.

If you visit a right-wing website, you'll find a lot more sympathy.

When you contribute to the oppression of a minority, you shouldn't be surprised to get angry responses, especially once that minority has been vindicated.

You're right - Obama could have repealed DADT unilaterally at any time. However, the only thing that would have done is once again have given the military the ability to ask and to actively seek out homosexuals for discharge. Homosexuals were banned (and still are for the next few months) from military service by a LAW - US Code Title 10, Chapter 37, Section 654. DADT was simply Clinton's way to circumvent a law he strongly disagreed with. Repealing DADT in no way would have affected the underlying law banning homosexuals from military service. Changing that law so that homosexuals can serve openly required an act of congress - Obama does not have the power to single-handedly get rid of laws he disagrees with.

Despite the title of the bill congress passed last week, it doesn't address Clinton's executive order (DADT). The bill in fact repeals the aforementioned law. Here is the text of the actual bill if you care to read it:
