Good morning everyone and welcome to QOTD for Tuesday, March 26th, 2013. My lovely 20-year old car has been pronounced terminally ill, and is at the mechanics awaiting tow-away by the wreckers. So this week I have to find a replacement – planning on a late model (but not new) runabout type hatchback – perhaps a Hyundai. It’s strange checking out car yards after a hiatus of 20 years!

Today’s Question:

Do you have any tips and hints to help me (and anyone else buying a car) get a good deal on my next car?

Extra Credit Question:

Have you ever visited a prison (either historical or working)?

Bonus Question:

Yes or no (or more, if you wish!)…

Do you like avocados?

Can you swim more than 100 yards without resting/stopping?

Are you a good whistler?

Will you be paying a bill today?

Do you recycle trash whenever possible?

Just for fun:

Are you older or younger than the “Ballad of Davy Crockett”?

Today in History:

1804 Territory of Orleans organizes Louisiana Purchase
1845 Patent awarded for adhesive medicated plaster, precursor of bandaid
1872 Thomas J. Martin patents fire extinguisher
1885 Eastman Film Co. manufactures first commercial motion picture film
1916 Birdman of Alcatraz receives solitary
1930 Congress appropriates $50,000 for Inter-American highway
1953 Dr. Jonas Salk announces vaccine to prevent polio
1955 "Ballad of Davy Crockett," becomes the #1 record in US

Today’s Word:

Wrest \ rest \ , verb;
1. to take away by force
2. to twist or turn; pull, jerk, or force by a violent twist.
3. to get by effort
4. to twist or turn from the proper course, application, use, meaning, or the like; wrench.
noun:
1. a wresting; twist or wrench.
2. a key or small wrench for tuning stringed musical instruments, as the harp or piano, by turning the pins to which the strings are fastened.

Today’s Question:

Do you have any tips and hints to help me (and anyone else buying a car) get a good deal on my next car?
Do lots of research on line first so you know what a fair asking price is for the car you're interested it. Then go to the dealer. Talk about price only with the sales person. Don't let them talk about monthly payments until you have established the price of the car. By offering you low monthly payments, they can stretch out the term of the loan so you're paying more than you think -- and if you finance the car with them, they're also profiting on the loan. Get your own financing from a credit union beforehand if you can. They have better rates. Be firm about what you're willing to pay, and be willing to walk if they try to play games with you. Good luck!

Extra Credit Question:

Have you ever visited a prison (either historical or working)?
Yes, I have visited Alcatraz

Bonus Question:

Yes or no (or more, if you wish!)…

Do you like avocados?
Yes
Can you swim more than 100 yards without resting/stopping?
I'm not sure, but I think so. I haven't gone swimming in ages.
Are you a good whistler?
No.
Will you be paying a bill today?
No, hubby does that, mostly on line.
Do you recycle trash whenever possible?
Yes, we have an excellent recycling program here.

Just for fun:

Are you older or younger than the “Ballad of Davy Crockett”?
Older, because I remember when it was a big hit.

Thanks, Kobber!

after examining the car and deciding you're really interested, watch in the dealer's eyes. It'll tell you a lot.

Extra Credit Question:

Have you ever visited a prison (either historical or working)?
tes. working.

Bonus Question:

Yes or no (or more, if you wish!)…

Do you like avocados? green slimy things.

Can you swim more than 100 yards without resting/stopping?
used to swim a mile 3 times a week. That was then and this is now and sadly I have to say no.

Are you a good whistler? Couldn't whistle if my life depended on it.

Will you be paying a bill today?
yes-4 actually.
Do you recycle trash whenever possible?
YES! everyone should.

Just for fun:

Kobber- play one car dealer off another.

As for prisons, I've been in at least half a dozen, including a Young Offender's Unit and a prison ship.

I was a bad boy.

Actually I was visiting the medical units on a professional basis.

Today’s Question:

Do you have any tips and hints to help me (and anyone else buying a car) get a good deal on my next car? Buy a car at the end of the year and the end of the month. Tell the salesman that you are not married to any particular dealer and will shop around at all nearby dealers of that same make/model and will go with the best deal. (works best if you buy a new car)

Extra Credit Question:

Have you ever visited a prison (either historical or working)? Yes.

Bonus Question:

Yes or no (or more, if you wish!)…

Do you like avocados? Yes, love them.

Can you swim more than 100 yards without resting/stopping? Probably not.

Are you a good whistler? Not at all.

Will you be paying a bill today? Nope, but I will tomorrow.

Do you recycle trash whenever possible? No.

Just for fun:

Are you older or younger than the “Ballad of Davy Crockett”? Older.

You might not like it. But if car sales are like the US, bringing a man with you to the negotiation may get you a better price.

Extra Credit Question:

No.

Bonus Question:
Yes or no (or more, if you wish!)…

Do you like avocados?
in guacamole
Can you swim more than 100 yards without resting/stopping?
I have in the past. Not recently, but I work out so. Maybe.
Are you a good whistler?
pretty good
Will you be paying a bill today?
nothing planed
Do you recycle trash whenever possible?
usually

Just for fun:

If I had more fingers I could figure out the answer to this question.

Do you have any tips and hints to help me (and anyone else buying a car) get a good deal on my next car?

Yes, here is an excellent website, I found very useful:
Car Buying Guide for New and Used Vehicles | CarBuyingtips.com ( please explore every link, topics, downloads and resources they provide ).
However I am not sure how much of this info apply in Australia...

Extra Credit Question:

Have you ever visited a prison (either historical or working)?

Alcatraz??

Bonus Question:

Yes or no (or more, if you wish!)…

Do you like avocados?

Love them!!

Can you swim more than 100 yards without resting/stopping?

Probably not. I am pretty mediocre swimmer.

Are you a good whistler?

No. I don't think I would manage any kind of sound...

Will you be paying a bill today?

Yes. Always by the end of the month.

Do you recycle trash whenever possible?

Yes, but I wish more items could be recycled.
Coming from Germany where they recycle EVERYTHING, I feel like we waste way too much resources here...

Just for fun:

Are you older or younger than the “Ballad of Davy Crockett”?

Hahaha... a sneaky way to ask a woman age...

Also, bring a friend along if you can. Good luck.

Mornin' all!

Today’s Question:

Do you have any tips and hints to help me (and anyone else buying a car) get a good deal on my next car?

Yes

Bonus Question:

No, all paid up for the month.
