haha, funny you say that. I just moved to Bensonhurst (native Staten Islander), with my spouse who has lived in DC all of her life, and as we were signing the lease I couldn't help thinking "Man I hope people in the neighborhood don't give her a hard time".
So if you see her walking down 18th avenue, please be nice!

I'm staying very near this spot (closer to the Church Ave subway stop), and I have to say that it is, indeed, pretty crappy.
I lived initially in Sunnyside, but couldn't renew my lease, so I had to find a temporary solution, and got a reasonably-priced room in this area until I sorted things out. Luckily I have them sorted now, and I can't wait to find somewhere new. The B/Q trains never run during off-hours. Every food establishment is ghetto, unappealing, and lacking any kind of charm. I wouldn't call it unsafe, but I think twice sometimes before going out at night (which I have never done in any other location.)
Honestly, Brooklyn as a whole just doesn't do it for me. Having spent most of my time in Queens (Sunnyside & Astoria), I have no idea how some parts of Brooklyn have become so "hot" in recent years. Compared to Queens, Brooklyn is more expensive, further from most of Manhattan, and generally dirtier, and more dangerous.

You clearly haven't checked out Bay Ridge or Park Slope, have you?

Before you say as a whole, make sure you've actually been to the 35+ neighborhoods.
I'm planning to visit NY for the 4th time in a few months. I fancied staying in Brooklyn this time and was looking at a place on Rutland Road near Bedford Ave. It looks ok from what I could see from the photographs.
Judging by the comments on this thread, I take it I should forget it?

The homes are very pretty, especially some of the old limestones, but what type of atmosphere are you looking for? PLG isn't the "trendy" Brooklyn dotted with cafes and restaurants.

Spent some time in Brooklyn last year but only in the day time mainly around Prospect Park. I note Rutland Road is close to the park. Don't mind travelling a bit, but only if the area is ok at night.
I take it the other side of Prospect Park / Park Slope is a much better place to stay?

I love how people are comparing it to The Williamsburg or Astoria type neighborhood. "well there's no cute cafes or restaurants." people walk around those 2 neighborhoods and think that's what a neighborhood should be like. These are some of the nicest realistic neighborhoods in the city, I've lived in both. To an outsider ya they seem normal but the nice part of these neighborhoods are some of the best and you pay for it. I dont know how anyone could compare neighborhoods like lafferts park to either of those. It's also a real insult to call anything within the historical distict of lafferts ghetto. That area is simply beautiful. Sure you can find a 2 bedroom for 1400 in Astoria. It's goin to be old, oddly shaped especially the living room, and the bedrooms will be 8x10 ft. If not smaller. I live in a 2 bedroom just off bedford south of Clarkson for 1400. The living room is 18x12, the bedrooms are 18x17 and 16x12 and their all perfect rectangles. It's a new renovation and we are the first to live in it. People move here for a reason and it's not the atmosphere.
