How is U2, the Clash, Beastie Boys, and Green Day considered "alternative"? U2 is pop, the Clash is pop/rock, Beastie Boys were punk at times and then rap the next, and Green Day is pop-ish punk.
I agree with this and am going with Nirvana and an other -Morphine
Hands down #1 with many more I could post. I think they had the best guitar of the bunch as well. Everyone wanted to know who these guys were and see them play. The same can't be said for many of the rest. Wasn't Metal, Punk, Pop, Rock etc. It was something clearly different.
I went with the 'Mats, partly because I like pretty much all their work between their first and last albums. Partly because they were an influence on a lot of diverse bands - from Nirvana to Goo Goo Dolls to Gaslight Anthem. And mostly because of all the bands listed on the poll, I still feel energized listening to the Mats and Blur, while I find much of the rest of those bands somewhat dated.
I do agree with the "alternative originally meant not-top-100 popular" sort of definition. As in, once you had a hit, you were no longer "alternative". And the music industry tried to re-label Nirvana, Pearl Jam and the like as "Modern Rock", so less popular bands could still be "alternative".
FWIW, I'm the type of guy who liked The Bends more than OK Computer, and thought Black Grape's "It's Great When You're Straight" to be the best CD of the 90s.
Red Hot Chili Peppers because they were so out there mixing metal, punk, rap, funk and evolved alternative rock in a way that no other band has ever done or is currently doing it. Plus, there is a good number of hits they have created.
I do find it interesting though that the first option has the most votes besides the "other" selection...

I love older RHCP, Californication was probably the last album I liked of theirs.
