If it were'nt for the Pixies, The Melvins, and REM there would have been no Nirvana.
*If there were no Husker Du, there would have been no Pixies
*If there were no Buzzcocks or Ramones, there would have been no Husker Du
*If there were no Beatles, there would have been no Buzzcocks or Ramones (or many other groups)
*If there were no Black Sabbath, there would have been no Melvins
*If there were no Soft Boys, there would have been no R.E.M.
*If there were no Byrds or Velvet Underground, there would have been no Soft Boys
Wow! That's a pretty good list to choose from. My first thought was The Stone Roses, maybe My Bloody Valentine, but my ultimate choice would have to be The Brian Jonestown Massacre. I've been listening to them for 10 years now and every album is pure lyrical genius! They start their North American tour in May. Can't wait to see 'em in D.C.

**I will say that while these older bands will remain my favs of all time, esp the Smiths. There are a ton of great bands today, although pop music is at an all time low.
The Cure is and will always be the best alternative band of all time, and the most influential. U2 and REM stopped being alternative a long time ago, and more than half of the bands you've listed wouldn't have existed if it wasn't for The Cure! Listen to those recent performances and tell me they don't still sound fresh and alternative!
