Voted for Nine Inch Nails although I don't consider them alternative rock. First band I thought about was Faith No More. The Tea Party, Cave In, Placebo, Shiner, Failure, and Nirvana would all be up there although once again I'm not sure they all fit alt rock

How is U2, the Clash, Beastie Boys, and Green Day considered "alternative"? U2 is pop, the Clash is pop/rock, Beastie Boys were punk at times and then rap the next, and Green Day is pop-ish punk.

I agree... aside from The Clash, most of those bands contributed heavily to the death of alternative rock

R.E.M.!!! They've been my favorite band since about age 12, and still are my favorites at age (almost) 32... they have such an amazing repertoire by this point, I just can't get tired of them! My favorite albums are Green & Eponymous, followed by Out of Time, though I honestly could enjoy any of their albums/songs. Something about Michael's voice just makes me swoon, especially in the times I've seen them live.

R.E.M. are my favorite active band. Still making great music. One of the best live acts I've seen. If you haven't already, listen to the album Up. Some of their best work, I think. A lot of talent in that band. Brilliant.

U2 was considered, "alternative" when they first started in the music business many years ago.

I'd say U2 was alternative up until Joshua Tree. And then again on Achtung Baby, Zooropa, and pop.
