Jane's Addiction and Alice and Chains. Hard to decide for me.

Its hard to lable all bands and a waste of time.

AIC is not metal, I think they are just as mighty and heavy as any metal band. They do remind me in a way of old Sabbath with that slow, guitar drivin, heavy grind. Staley's voice is haunting.

Jane's was also as mighty at times "Ted, Just Admit It" "Mountain Song" "Three Days" 'Trip Away" but, I don't think anyone would or should put a metal or punk tag on them.

Hey its only Rock 'n Roll and I like it!!!

Nirvana FTW! There are some great bands on that list, but I gotta go with Nirvana.
They just flat-out changed music.

I vited Replacements, but I guess most on the forum werent around when they played. Husker Du (Bob Moulds first group) was also cool at the time.

I voted for The Cure, but The Smiths tie for me.

As for what "alternative" means...it originally meant music that was an alternative to mainstream radio rock, but then after going mainstream it kind of lost that meaning, haha. I like "alternative" music because so much of it is hard to categorize. If something fits into a neat little box, it is often boring.
And yeah, "indie" is pretty much the new the word for "alternative".

The Cure and the Smiths probably top the list for me but there are too many there that I like to be able to choose just one.

Sonic Youth. They're definitely one of the forefathers/mother of alternative music, and a big influence on the early 90's alternative scene.
