Examples:

Hendrix's version of Dylan's 'All Along The Watchtower'. Dylan has long conceded this fact.

Tina Turner's version of the Beatles' "Help".

Joe Cocker's version of the Beatles' "A Little Help From My Friends".

Completely different topic. I vote leave it up.

It's not a completely different topic and the stuff he mentioned in the first post are already in that thread.

What's the big deal about more than one thread? There's always room for one more (thread). I'm not into exclusivity.

Hey Gimme, I love the Jimmy Buffet version of Brown Eyed Girl. Anything Jimmy sings is A-OK by me!

It's a more specific version of the other topic. The other doesn't necessarily say how you view the cover compared to the original, but this one does. However the other one certainly allows you to choose covers you feel are better than the original.

So I could go either way. It's not really necessary to have this, but there is a slight difference. Although I think I'm talking myself toward maybe keeping as this could maybe focus more on comparison. For example show the cover and the original, then let the others discuss if you're right on the cover being an improvement.

Here's a classic case.

YouTube - ‪At Last-Etta James‬‏ - Etta James cover.

YouTube - ‪Glenn Miller Orch - Ray Eberle - Lynn Bari "At Last"‬‏ - Glenn Miller's original.

Although I like Miller, and the original's not bad, to me this one is pretty clearly "the cover is an improvement." James's version is much more of a classic than the original and I think it's widely agreed she essentially made the song "hers." When Beyonce, or whoever it was, do "At Last" they're first thinking her not Miller or Bari. Even if you think that's unfair you almost have to realize it's true.

I'm real partial to Armstrong's, which I think is the original, so I don't know. We'll see what others think.

Here's another where I think the, more famous, cover is better than the original and I think the opinion is widely shared.

YouTube - ‪"Wild Thing" Original Version by Jordan Christopher & The Wild Ones (1965)‬‏ - By Chip Taylor, this is the first group to record it.

YouTube - ‪The Troggs- Wild Thing‬‏ - Not saying it's the greatest song in history, but to me this cover is clearly much better.

To be honest I kind of dislike the original, which to me almost sounds like the singer is taking a mix of helium and pot, although the harmonica is okay.

Chip Taylor doing it, although I can't find his original demo, is a bit better than the Wild Ones IMO. Although still not sure it's better than the Troggs or Hendrix and this rendition might be him being influenced by later version.

Well, this one doesn't blow away the Beach Boys original, but the mere fact that anyone even attempted to do this is good enough for me. Todd Rundgren being as true to the original from an album that was all covers done in the same vein. Brian Wilson was impressed with it... From the 1976 LP, Faithful. And awfully close to the original. The harmonies are perfect.
