The original Godzilla made 500 million something worldwide for a profit of around 50 million. This one should be lower.
The old rule of thumb was that the studios get half of the box office from domestic. So a $200m project should sell $200m domestic (USA and Canada) so that the studio gets half that amount. The studios get less than half in other countries and only a quarter of China. So the other $100 million has to come from foreign box, and profit comes from streaming, pay per view, DVD sales etc.
So a movie with a production budget of $200 million that makes around $200 million worldwide (most of it foreign box office) is a massive money loser.
Now a movie like PACIFIC RIM ($190 million production ) made
Domestic: $101,802,906 24.8%
+ Foreign: $309,200,000 75.2%
Even though the domestic revenue is low (~$52m for the studios) the foreign return was so massive that a sequel was made.
I said Zhang Ziyi was not given a decent plot and was not quite useful there. Perfectly True.
If you want to argue against me, you should show me why Zhang got a good plot and why her acting is important to this movie.
You said "As Dr. Chen and Dr. Ling are identical twins with a connection to Mothra, it is possible that they are grown up versions of Mothra's fairy girls from the original Mothra movie, or a reference to them at a minimum."
The connection with Dr. Ling etc. have little impact on this movie product.

You're essentially telling me you're unfamiliar with canon and that the inclusion of something memorable that was expected to be left out altogether is a nothingburger to you.
I'm not interested in "arguing" with you about that.

Oh of course, I was talking about this movie per se, and an actress role in particular, and you kept talking about something else.
Even if you want to brag about the background knowledge of the story, you missed my point that I was talking about the actress's function in the movie.
The film maker has the freedom to enhance or reduce any role. And her role looks weak.
No, WE are talking about Godzilla: King of the Monsters.
That's the only movie currently on the table. And her role is not "weak," it may just seem weak to you because:
I.) You're a fan (like me), and you wanted to see her say/do more, but she's there throughout the entire movie, whereas returning character Dr. Graham (Sally Hawkins) bites it;
II.) Her role may seem smaller than it is because she has to share screen time with a row of other characters.
That's it. She gives you a nice chunk of intel regarding her and her family's background, what they do, and with just as many words she's able to illuminate how silly our western concepts of certain things look.
The connection with Dr. Ling etc. have little impact on this movie product.
It wasn't meant to. It is setting up something that will (hopefully) continue in future movies. Complaining that her character wasn't fully developed in this movie is like complaining that Luke didn't become a full-fledged Jedi in the first STAR WARS flick. They're building something. This was a first step, but it wasn't meant to be the destination.
This is exactly how you build a movie franchise. You tell a great story with a beginning, middle, and end, but you also lay the groundwork for future movies. Marvel has done this quite successfully.
We went to watch it today....we liked it. It was neat seeing all the monsters.
If you go watch it, make sure you sit through the credits. Everybody in the theater except us left before the credits were finished so they missed something.
