Default .....some like it hot....some like it cold

..............with all this jawin' about cold....let me refresh the memory(s) of those that were here for the winter of 1988/1989..... How 'bout it MTSilvertip........I'm sure you remember the following:

(23) years ago this week consider the following:

1/ In Helena the temp officially dropped to minus 33 (was up to 10 degrees colder in outlying area).....and it stayed officially below minus 20F for slightly over 3 1/2 days!! Wind chill values dropped (in Helena) down below minus 75!! And the brakes on a freight train failed allowing the train to enter Helena out of control and exploded at Carrol College doing extensive damage to the college.

2/ Wisdom, Montana (over in the Big Hole Valley) recorded minus 53F with windchill of minus 94F.

3/ At the mouth of Bear Creek & Fred Burr Creek(s) in the Bitterroot it got down to minus 42F and never got above minus 21 for over 3 days......and 6 Water Mains in the city of Hamilton froze and many homes were without water for several days..........Frost was found to be as deep as 59 inches in several areas in town where traffic "drove" the frost much deeper than normal due to lack of snow-cover combined with an extremely high moisture content in the earth.

Combine these temps with the unbelieveable winds: .....124mph at Choteau;...114/117 in the Browning and Shelby areas and it blew a dozen empth RR freight cars over on their sides in Shelby.

If I remember correctly, (4) people died as a result of the cold and overall damage estimates from the 6 day storm exceeded 40 to 50 million dollars.

Also many hundreds and hundreds of Antelope and deer died huddled up against fences from the cold. Very costly winter for wildlife of all kinds.............

I'll take this current winter weather ANYTIME.........as the old saying goes:......"be careful what you wish for"...............

Hey Griz,

I wasn't in Helena at that time, but I remember that winter. That train wreck in Helena caused a lot of problems. The blast broke windows all over the west side of town.
One of the responding command fire trucks was left running with the lights on, down wind of the fire, and when the firemen went to get back into the truck, it was completely encased in ice from the spray off the hoses, still running.

20 years ago today, Helena shook, rattled and froze

In the winter of 82-83, if I remember the year right, we got a Siberian clipper through that with wind chill, made it -128 in Miles City one night. I was in Big Timber at that time and it dropped to -45/-50 (no wind chill) for 3 days. Everything was shut down.

In the winter of 1979 in Bozeman, between sundown on Good Friday and sunrise on Easter, we received 5 feet of snow on the level at my place on the Bozeman Pass.

Believe me, I am enjoying this winter

OMG! I would be dead. This winter has been okay so far, sort of easing me into winter weather again.

Gotta take the good with the bad. Unfortunately, I like to eat. I like the fact that ranchers can water their cattle in the stock ponds and they don't have to hall water. I like the fact that they can irrigate their fields to get hay for the upcoming winter, or raise grains and other food items that I can purchase at the farmers market.

Right now our snowpack is 50% of what it should be for this time of year. Not 50% of total, but 50% of what it should be for January. We are way behind. Our snowpack keeps melting off on us.

So, if that means some nasty temps to go along with some snow, than so be it. Bring it on.
