A black family sat down next to them (they were white) and the mother got very loud and abusive, and they (the white people) were thrown out. I remember this like it was yesterday. I don't know what the white people said, but during that time in Miami, I can only imagine. Still, people don't believe me when I tell them Miami was a typical Southern city at one time.
So true! In the 60s, my doctor's office had a separate "colored patients waiting room". On city buses, blacks almost always sat in the back, even after the civil rights act was passed. Schools were still segregated, as were the high school athletic leagues. There were "colored" movie theaters in Coconut Grove and the CND (aka Overtown), and "colored" taxies (yes, they painted that on the cab!). South Miami had its own little "colored" business district with barbers, cafes, grocery stores, etc, and blacks were not allowed at Crandon Park Beach, they had to go to the "colored" beach down the road at Virginia Key.

What a bizarre place it was!

Ocean World was located on SE 17th Street just west of the inter coastal bridge on the north side. I remember the commercials they had as a kid. Not sure what is there now, most likely condos or shopping. Planet ocean was near the Seaquarium on Virginia Key.

Another forgotten attraction was near 77 avenue and the railroad tracks, called "lost lake caverns". A friend of mine born in 1950 told me stories about the place but I never experienced it myself. The palmetto expressway and development eliminated it. However, some of it remains as two islands in the rock pit at the palmetto and Miller road.

As kid growing up in Coconut Grove I remember going to "love-ins" at Peacock Park, riding my bike along the bike path from our home on Poincianna down in to the Grove to eat at Cozzollis Pizza, or going to Lums to get the best hot dog ever.

When I was in highschool I used to go to a roller rink in South Miami or Coral Gables. I can't remember the name. It was just North of US1. Maybe Southland Skate?

I used to go surfing off the South Beach pier, back before South Beach was The Trend spot. It was just surfers, fishermen, usually some guy playing saxophone, and junkies. There was a place called "Coldest Beer On Earth" that totally lived up to its name.

Yes, the pier at Miami Beach, I used to fish there a lot. There was a nice crowd of people. During the night, there were some shark anglers fishing sharks from the beach, they used steel wire during the last 100 feets or so. At that time South Beach was entirely different. I remember Cozzoli in Grove, the owner was shot by the mafia because they wanted the franchise, it was a gold mine. Lums was the best burguers.

Interesting, didn't know about that! I seem to remember a rock quarry at that location in the 60s (south of Bird Rd, east of Tropicana Park). Went by it every day on the way to school.
