Because police officers are in a position of unique trust and power over others. They should be held to the highest standard of conduct, far more so than any other public sector position.

I'd be in favor of them being fired and criminally charged if they stole $100, to say nothing of 5 or 6 figure sums. And I'll remind that in virtually every other job, that's exactly what would happen. A cashier at the store pockets a single bill and they're going to be fired immediately. Why should a police officer be any different?

And if it truly is happening in police depts then maybe what they are getting paid should be looked at.

Good idea. They're the highest paid city employees by far, and median salary is approximately $90,000. You can certainly live in Boston on $90,000 a year, since most of the city population lives on substantially less than that.

Next they will probably go after social security -- defund the old people.

I think they will find in November no one agrees with them except for facebook.
Ridiculous--The GOP are the ones going after Social Security as they're trying to eliminate the SS payroll tax for the remainder of the year. Blame those who deserve the blame.

They were just selling drugs and stealing from people to feed their kids. Too bad.
I don't know people who would excuse that behavior, either. They should be prosecuted.

I'm on the side of the taxpayers 'cause we have to pay for all of this crap.

Can someone assure me that it is still only a few bad apples? Hope we can back the blue in their quest to root out the abuse and fraud.

One area of government that gets some higher scrutiny is standardized tests. Now I heard about Chicago because of Freakonomics but then there was Atlanta. Supposedly the tip off was when some special needs kids became gifted in a year. I heard that if they made their score EVERYONE in the district would get $2,000. I don't mean just the teachers but groundskeepers, lunch ladies etc. So everyone kept quiet about it.

the highest amount of security I've ever dealt with domestically (not traveling) was taking an MTEL test. They don't want teachers to cheat for licenses nor do they want kids to cheat.

You have to report things like this though because eventually it just sinks everyone else in with it.

Because our tax systems has 1000s loopholes that benefit mostly the richest and the billionaires also have money and resources to find and actually exploit those loopholes....and save enough money through them to make the effort worthwhile.

This is typically a legislative issue not a criminal issue.
