Damn. My condolences

That’s quite shocking considering how little interaction he’s had with others.

All it takes is one person. As far as I've been told, his best friend was being cautious too but still worked. He's in his late 50s and works with a bunch of 20 and 30 somethings. Maybe whoever introduced it to the work site was taking precautions too, but maybe they thought it wouldn't hurt them. And it probably didn't. But now my uncle is dead when the chemo was working and, while he likely would have died with his cancer, he had good months and even years ahead of him.

I'm sure everyone who visits one relative who does not live in their home or one friend thinks that little interaction will be safe. And it usually is, until it isn't.

I do thinks restaurants will be in trouble again once the nice weather disappears which will happen in October. Some might still be ok with sitting outside but once it turns freezing that’s not going to happen. Distancing will still need to happen indoors which makes room for way less people plus many are afraid to eat inside.
I doubt the majority restaurants can survive off of indoor dining with the limited capacity and still having much of the same overhead. They'd probably do better as an all-takeout, and just eliminating the overhead needed for dine-in which even at 50% capacity is not that much lower than during normal operations.

He was receiving treatment for cancer and had VERY limited interaction with anyone else - none of his nieces and nephews have seen him for instance - due to his compromised immune system. We were all shocked when he passed away suddenly since he had been doing so well. He woke up having a very hard time breathing on Friday morning, collapsed while waiting for an ambulance, and was stabilizing in the ER before he died of a massive heart attack. His doctors believe that while cancer made him more susceptible, it was the blood clots from covid that caused his heart attack and death.

Only 3 people saw him - his twin brother who he had lived with for his entire 55 years, his sister who took him to appointments, and his best friend once. His best friend tested positive after exposure at a work site.

He is the 5th person I've known to die of covid, including 2 coworkers, my aunt's mother-in-law, and just yesterday I learned that an ex-boyfriend died of covid in his mid 30s.

In any case, no indoor dining for me. Probably not until a critical mass, myself included, have received a vaccine. I'm considered very high risk as a blood cancer survivor. My boyfriend is very low risk (no preexisting conditions, early 30s) but between me and employing his medium-to-high risk parents, it's not something he's willing to chance either.
WOW that's all awful. Sorry.

Interesting move with the flu shot mandate for school kids. I wonder if businesses themselves will enact similar policies this winter.

You thought the debate on masks was bad...this one should be interesting

Charolastra, I am so sorry for his passing. It’s sad that he was being so careful and his friend must be feeling very guilty now.

I’m sorry to hear that as well. My next door neighbor’s grandfather passed away from it recently also. It feels real as we start to know people who’ve gotten this or died from it.

I’m all for people getting the flu shot, particularly this year. We’d be getting our children vaccinated regardless. However, something feels off about mandating vaccinations for completely remote students. Open schools if you want to use them to extend your authority.

The ACLU should have fun with the flu shot mandate. Or maybe some class-action law suits from parents whose kids had a reaction to the shot?

We get to flu shot every year, but I'm definitely not in support of the gov't forcing a flu shot on families who choose not to get it.
