And then there was the winter of two years ago when the snow that Caribou got, was given to the coast, and we got 155 inches. We left for a funeral in PA about April 7, and we had about 37 inches on the ground.

Right now in Bar Harbor, there are still places with 4-5 inches on the ground, and we are scheduled for a April Fool's Day event of 3-5 inches. I love snow, and thats one of the reasons why I moved to Maine. I have two AWD cars with winter tires, and all the right gear in clothing as well as a toasty house for cheap due to wood burning(which I still have about 5 cords left--- and I rarely use more than 4 cords a winter).

But when April comes, and I need to fill out the income tax, its time for the snow to move to the big winter in the sky, and not return until next December.

Yeah.... we're hoping it stays south of us here in Bar Harbor. Time for winter to start getting over for the 2016-17 winter. We don't need any more of Frankie McDonald's predictions just now.

3-5 inches this Saturday up here in the woods. Caribou has 12 inches or more of snow on the ground continuously since November 25.That is yet another record for this winter season. It is the fourth coldest winter of all time as of 3/28 and if nothing changes by midnight tomorrow night it will be the second coldest ever.

I question that statement. March has a chance to be the coldest on record for Caribou, but December of last year, January of this year, and Feb of this year aren't even in the top 10 of coldest for Caribou. March wasn't that far below normal. How do you get the coldest winter out of that? We've had plenty of winters here in the county colder than this one.

Look it up if you don't believe me.

Caribou Top 10

Graphic I made...

Top 30 Season Snowfall Departures for all NWS Climo Sites. Some big moves past 2 weeks!

  • Binghamton still holding 1st place being 55" above norm
  • Gray Maine huge move getting 16 inches of snow past 8 days puts them at 3rd spot now 43" above normal! 123" for the season. Wow
  • Portland Maine also a big move getting almost a foot of snow last 2 days now 3 feet above normal. 95.3" for the season! (normal is 59.3"!)
  • Burlington, VT also a big move. They are in the 100"+ season snowfall club... 2 feet above normal
  • Lastly.... Hartford, Bridgeport, Islip, Concord, Worcester & Syracuse also in the Top 30 highest snowfall departures.
A snowy season it was. Notice no central U.S or Midwestern Sites on the list. Mostly West and Northeast. Interesting!

The last time Burlington, VT had 100"+ season was 2010-11.

Only 9 times since 1892 have they done that. This year makes it 10 out of 125yrs.

Looks like February and March 2017 did it with 30"+ months. Wow what a comeback

Just quoting the NWS.
