I agree with your comments about some of the cheesy themeing. I know a lot of people didn't like the "Disneyfication" of Vegas, but I much prefered The Luxor (for example) when it was both Egyptian themed inside and out. What you have now is a bizarre building that doesn't know what it is - a giant glass pyramid complete with sphinx on the outside, with all black and chrome inside.

I agree too about Planet Hollywood - while it's still OKish in the Casino, I think what they have done to Desert Passage is an absolute travesty. It was one of the cooler places in town to have a stroll, now it's like any medium/high end mall in California in some parts and a weird hybrid of desert passage and modern trendy in others (from when the money for the facelift ran out).
Funny that you mentioned Disneyfication .. My husband keeps telling me that an 'adult' version of Disney needs to come to Vegas, haha

Planet Hollywood was just weird to me, it was sort of what you said about the Luxor, that it didn't know what it was supposed to be. I kind of expected it to be similar to the Planet Hollywood restaurants, and it was nothing like that.

I'm very disappointed to hear that the Luxor isn't Egyptian themed on the inside anymore. We still haven't made our way inside but we were excited to go there one day. Not so much anymore I suppose!

Nobody is going to build on the strip at any price range for the next few years.

Have you seen a current balance sheet for any resort here in Las Vegas. While the hotel and F&B do not operate at loss leaders rates of the past. They are still currently operating at a loss. The money is in gaming and leased space revenues. In house retail throws in a nickel or two into the coffer if they have a good year. Box office will either make money or loose depending on the deals negotiated.

Yeah, Luxor seems half-baked. The outside has all the Egyptian-them attraction going for it, but inside it's very bland with very little Egyptian theme. They could probably easily dress it up and make it feel much more special.

Unfortunately MGM has been spending the last few years dressing it DOWN to take out the theme. I don't see it being reversed unless someone buys the property and even then it will be cost prohibitive to make many changes in this new economic reality

True but I still think the major gaming corps have lost sight of appealing to the average joe. (LVD back me up here!) The guy who works 50 hours a week and comes home to a wife who doesn't cook, clean scrub, and watches Oprah all day. Two teenage kids who WONT work and a rich neighbor who rubs it in his face how poor he is. What about him?

If gaming corps can begin doing this again they will begin to see things turn around

Luxor, Excalibur, Tropicana, Monte Carlo, Bally's Paris, Flamingo, Harrah’s, Treasure Island ECT ECT ECT are resorts that cater to middle income. The rates are set by consumer demand plain and simple. Table game minimums drop to consumer demand, Hotel rates fluctuate to demand. They are not going to give you a room for $59 when your neighbor is willing to pay $89 for it.

When you get there and wander around enough, you will see that this is and has been in effect for years. One owner will have a high, middle high, middle, middle low and lower class style casino and hotel. I guess the owners of CC just thought they needed what they built. Maybe it would work somewhere, (like NYC) but I think it may have a tough time in Vegas.

So...now what do they do? MGM Mirage/Dubai World are commited to the monstrousity. What do they do if its predicted failure was accurate?

Im trying to book a flight and hotel to visit Vegas for 3 days. you know kimba about me planning to move. I have a chance to get a deal on a round trip flight with a 3 night stay in the Stratosphere for $480 total

It'tl definitely be cool to walk around the strip and see what it has to offer.
