Exhibit featuring Sgt Charles R. Long, the only Medal of Honor (Korean War) recipient from Independence. The long bridge on US Highway 24 just west of Fairmount was named for him. He was from the Fairmount area.

Another view of the arena. Sound baffles have been installed all along the top for better sound.

The former Independence Junior High (subsequently renamed Palmer Junior High) taken from the memorial building.

The building is for sale and the receptionist said she heard the building had sold but then she said she had heard it before and nothing happened.

The portion to the right of the doors was the original building. The portion to the left was somewhat new when I attended. Two front entrances in the old portion have been bricked up and recessed windows installed.

Right in front of the entrance was where the Enola Gay fuselage was parked when I was looking out a window on the top floor between classes around 1955. The sidewalks back then were wider and there was no parking in front of the school except for school buses.
