"We now interrupt your Police memories for a news flash....

Reliable sources report, and this reporter has confirmed, that construction has begun on the eastern portion of the old Pace School Bus yard along 23rd St west of Crysler. According to signs posted on site it will soon be a CVS Pharmacy.

We now return you to Police Story.

How is the big QT store and filling station construction progressing at 23rd and Noland?

Any indication they are going to close the one on the other end of the block at Noland and Fair or have both open?

It looks to me like the newer one could serve 23rd Street traffic and the old one serve Noland traffic.

We now fast forward to the 1960s. This one was taken at the rear of the Police Annex at Liberty & Kansas. The motorcycles were kept in the basement garage. The portion of the garage to the left of the garage door was the crime lab where I spent a few years. Barely peeking over the car is one of the old Cushman three wheelers used by meter maids.

This is the style shoulder patch worn during my tenure. Later it was changed to a dark blue background. This pattern was later retired.

It is very close to opening, perhaps next week. They will close the old one, but I don't know if they plan to demolish it.

I remember those meter maids. Do they still have them?

Come to think of it, I don't think there is any metered parking any more, is there?

That Police Annex was at one time the offices of the Missouri Water Company, which operated in University City and Independence. It is the company that first drilled the wells on the Missouri River that go down to an underground river to supply clean water to Independence. This was some time in the fifties. Prior to that the water was coming directly out of the Missouri River.

I don't have any recollection as to when the city purchased the company and began operating the water utility.

I see in The Examiner that the Independence Power & Light wants to purchase the old MCI Hospital grounds out at 23rd and RD Mize Road for Power & Light Offices. The old hospital would be torn down but the medical office building would be retained.

I recall one officer having a three wheeled motorcycle. He issued parking meter tickets from his vehicle prior to the hiring of the meter maids.

The last meter maid was in the early 1980s. She became a dispatcher, and retired just a few months ago.

Next up in our police parade is the Chevrolet Biscayne from the 1960s.

I see where the Little Blue River will reach flood stage tomorrow morning in Eastern Jackson County, presumably meaning Independence, also.
