I'll legalize them on the condition that they register with the government, take no social services for 15 years, and get deported in a heartbeat (no lengthy appeals) upon conviction of a felony or their second misdemeanor. Anyone found in this country illegally gets 20 years in a prison camp in the desert before being deported. Deal?
Sure. Make sure those rules apply to you as well. Unless you think you're special.
If illegals become legal residents or US citizens and pay taxes, then they should receive the social services they're paying for.

I was born here and have been paying taxes for a long time. The system doesn't work when people come here, earn so little that no tax is paid or work for cash under the table, and immediately start consuming social services.
True. I know know someone who works in county social services. Babies don't get sent checks. Their illegal parents do. It is illegal for that social worker to report the family to INS. If they come to the country with 5 kids and the have one in the U.S., then 6 kids get benefits. I believe the 7th doesn't. A lot of illegal woman qualify by claiming to be single. But, they're actually married. The marriage was in Mexico. Husband lives somewhere else, waits 'till things get settled, and then moves in with his wife.
Health care? are they denied at the ER? no. Who pays for that?
Besides...make them all legal? Who in the world said that the country of Mexico should be given a monopoly on our immigration policy? That's BS. How many poor a$$ people live in this world? Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe. But 12-20 million Mexicans deserve it more? That's bull.
We need a disincentive to coming here illegally. As it is now, deportation is a revolving door. If people knew that getting caught meant more than just a trip home, they might think twice about doing it in the first place.
One thing to remember is that California is the largest/most productive agricultural area in the US and this sector contributes billions of dollars to the state's GDP. It's a double-edged sword though since the main source of field labor are illegal migrant workers. And even bigger quandary is the construction/real estate market, which boomed during the last cycle with easy credit & again, cheap labor provided by undocumented workers.
What we need from legislators is a long-term plan to decrease our dependence on these two labor-intensive sectors, while convincing fellow Californians that higher prices whether at the grocery or remodeling a kitchen is an acceptable tradeoff to prevent fiscal collapse & deterioration of our quality of life.
