Most of the land west of the runways /south of I-565 is Huntsville City Limits.

FYI

The airport is situated today on 7,800 acres of land and can provide plenty of growth for passenger traffic. Future land acquisition remains in the works. Some 3,500 acres have been identified west of the airport that could be a part of the airport’s long-term operations. He said 2,000 of that area has already been purchased. When the acquisition process is complete, the Huntsville-Madison County Airport Authority should be sitting on approximately 10,000 acres.

Former airport CEO Rick Tucker said the additional acreage would provide a land mass larger than Atlanta’s Hartsfield Airport, the busiest airport in the world. The new master plan calls for the construction of five runways, but Tucker quickly notes that five runways won’t be needed in his lifetime.

Not terribly exciting but the current trend of extended stay, apartment style suite hotels continues. The corner lot between Holmes and Sanderson is a future site for a Woodspring Suites and/or a Everhome Suites hotel.
A block off of University and walking distance to Mid City.

They don't want to limited like they were with their old Huntsville Airport on the north side of Airport Road.

While I whole heartedly agree we need to move to the metric system, it wasn’t widely adopted across the world until the mid to late 1800s.

That said I have a plan for adoption that would be fairly easy. First go cold turkey and switch temperature overnight. It is easy and easy to comprehend, single digits are cold, tens you need a jacket, twenty’s are pleasant and 30+ is hot.

For roads, pick a year, that year six year olds start learning metric only in school that year going forward, at the same time all federal highways start changing 10% of their signs per year. In 10 years the signs are 100% converted and those 6 year old kids are now 16.

Liquid measurement is easy to change, we already buy 2Liter bottles and 750ml bottles of wine. People will just have to buy new measuring devices for cooking and such.

TBH, huntsville will never need five runways. They tried to build an airport with six runways in Dubai, and they only got to four and realized there will never be enough traffic to justify six runways. That airport, al-Maktoum was planned to serve regional airlines and be a major international air cargo hub…. Sound familiar???

What could really see happening is they move the intermodal train yard over to the west side, the east side of the airport is too cramped and there’s no room to expand intermodal operations. Moving the rail yard would free up space for air cargo operations, and as a side note the route the train has to take to get there is cumbersome.

One of the articles I read on the Aerojet-Rocketdyne expansion said they were moving into a leased facility.

Any chance they are going into the old Remington/Chrysler facility east of the airport?

I have no idea, but it sounds like a reasonable thing to do if the facility fits their needs.

It may not, at least in the next hundred years or so, but it's nice to see that they plan ahead by buying land. Plus, you don't want a lot of "things" to build up around a busy airport (e.g., LAX) because it can be dangerous. HSV isn't all that busy now, but if the area keeps growing it will be eventually.

To put things in perspective, I heard on the news that over the Thanksgiving weekend, the two airports in Houston expected to handle 2.3 million passengers. That's about twice what HSV has in a year, and about the same as Birmiingham's yearly passenger total. Us smaller cities have a way to go before joining the big boys.
