You could buy your own fabric at a fabric store. That way, you know the quality of the stitching.
Not being a seamstress or sewer, how would one know the quality of the stitching - what do we look for/ask for?
I would do this and its a good idea. Buy the fabric and do something to the edges to prevent fraying. That would be a laugh, though. I'd probably mess that up and render the "higher quality" towels cheap and stringy...

Okay, I'll put it another way--since women aren't learning the same skills that they used to learn for years--if there's something wrong with the stitching, by doing it yourself, you have only yourself to blame.
well duh...where do you think the fabric is made? Even if you make your own towels the cheap made in China terry cloth will still pull and come undone.
I too am very frustrated with towels! My mom used her wedding gift towels for decades and they didn't fall apart. Mine began falling apart a few years in. I bought some new at Bed Bath and Beyond and one frayed the 1st time I washed it! Thanks for the suggestions. It is sad that everything is made in China and sucks now. Even my Levi's are made in China now!
If you want hotel quality towels buy from someone that sells to hotels!
I bought mine from this website www.mallitems.com awhile ago and they still look and feel good. They are made of 100% cotton. You may want to check out. Their prices are really good too.
The Target towels (I think they are Waverly brand) I bought a couple of years ago are holding up beautifully. I also have to second the positive comment about Lands' End. They make very nice towels.
Personally the last towels we bought that we like were from penny's on sale and 100% cotton. I hate the slcik velvet feeling towels as they don't dry good.
I am so disappointed. I always wanted the Luxe Towels made in Fortunoff. They were the softest towels I ever felt in my 66 years. However I procrastinated and now Fortunoff is closed. I wrote alot of letters and found out that the Karen Neuberger towels were the same. But after reading all these reviews I am afraid to buy them from Bon Ton because of all the remarks made about them being manufactured in China. Now what??? We really need towels.
Costco has wonderful towels and the price is very reasonable. I've bought wonderful towels at HomeGoods and Marshalls - ones that I have had for many years. I like white towels that I can bleach.
