The worst town I have ever been in is Richton Mississippi.
My sister lived there for, I don't know, 16 years or something.
Fire Ant Hills the size of a small desk.
Rattlesnakes so thick that the lumberjacks often have to pull out of an area and kill the snakes before they can harvest them.
Brown Recluse Spiders that get in-bedded in the brick work on your house.
No economy that is legal. Only work is on the off shore oil rigs. Most women raise their kids alone, while the husband is away 3 weeks of every month.
In breeding. My sisters husband was a minister. They used to drive their youth group to another county to find other kids to date that they were not related to.
The local restaurant was in the front room of a woman's house. About once every six months the state would close them down because their kids had worms, and had to be de-wormed before they could re-open the restaurant.
Really the epitome of poor, racist, uneducated South. Very sad, that in a state with some great universities, it could exist so close. But, they wouldn't have it any other way.

Default NEWARK, NJ (and Camden, NJ)

Newark has got to be the worst city on the face of the earth. Yes, yes, I know, NYC and LA but at least THEY have some nice areas, expensive areas yada,yada,yada...newark has none, it's just newark. Years ago there used to be some beautiful sections. My parents were born and raised there and I've heard wonderful stories of them growing up and how great it was. My dad was a Newark cop (homicide no less = obviously a very busy man), my grandparents still lived there while I was growing up, but now they have long been out of there, dad retired quite a few years ago and AMEN, I hope I don't ever have to go there again. Gangs, drugs, murder, more gangs, more drugs and then some more murder. That about sums up Newark. Oh and the Blue Cross building and Seton Hall Law (woo-hoo). Did I mention gangs, drugs and murder?? Of course you definitely can make it through the city and even make a few stops without dealing with any of that stuff, but who the h*ll wants to?? They've been saying they want to clean up Newark for years. Yes, they've made some changes and the business section does actually look a little better, we have the NJPAC and the Newark Bears, but no matter what they do, for those of us who have witnessed the downfall of Newark, no one's ever going to move BACK there. They'll get people who are new to the state maybe who don't know what Newark used to be, but the rest of us, we've all gotten that bad taste in our mouths...wishful thinking for the Mayor. I grew up in a small town on the outskirts of newark...we now refer to it as Newark, Jr. and I don't live there anymore to say the least. I'm sure there are even worse out there than this but as far as I'm concerned, they should chop the actual city of Newark off the map. And Newark is statiscally not as bad as Camden - last time I read, Camden was the murder capital of the country. I guess what I'm saying is NJ kind of sucks altogether. However, I could deal with living in some areas (for now) considering I was born and raised here...but even 60 years from now, I wouldn't let anyone bury my cold, dead body in one of those two nasty cities.

The worst place I have ever been to and spent time in is Sylmar, CA. Had business in Saugus, CA. and reserved a hotel sight unseen in Sylmar. Big mistake.

Thank goodness I wasn't drinking a beverage when I read your post, the "America's infected wart" as a stepdown from an already lowly "armpit" just cracked me up! I don't know Amarillo. I've driven through on my drives between California and Missouri, but only stopped one time to sleep overnight. Supposedly it has the best air in America.. All I know is that I'm glad I don't live there.

I'm going to have to nominate Baytown, TX.

My aunt lives there and has been trying to get out for years. One time she and her family actually DID leave and stayed with relatives out of state for a while, but their house never sold so they had to move back. And if that isn't an indicator of a town going "south" (and it is, literally, sinking into the swamp it's built on) I don't know what is!

What can I say about the place...flat, hot, hurricaine bait. Oppresively muggy, bugs I can't even identify, smelly oil refineries all over the place, gang, drug and crime infested (I'm pretty sure the illegals outnumber the citizens.) Nothing worthwhile to do there other than battle the crazy Texas drivers to Houston or Galveston.

I remember one time I was chatting with a stranger from Houston. I told her "oh, I have an Aunt in that area?" She asks, "where?" I said "Baytown." and all she could say is "Oh, I'm sorry!"

Las Vegas, NV is pretty bad in my book.

Crime, heat, sprawl, ugliness, pollution, gangs, overpriced housing, oh and more heat. I always know I'm getting close to Las Vegas because of the 5-mile radius of litter that surrounds the city on the north side. Other than the grotesque LV strip, there is really not much there.

1. Check out their crime rate!
2. I subscribe to the Philadelphia Daily News, even where I live now, just to remind me of why I left, and the amount of murders....it's disgusting.
3. Their public schools (I was a public school teacher)
4. The trash that is absolutely littering all over the place
5. The dime baggies and crack vials, and bullet casings that I have found even in some of the "better" neighborhoods
6. The prositution that is all over certain neighborhoods, hidden or very prominent
7. the filthy, smelly public transportation (I have taken the subway, el and various buses throughout my life!)
8. over priced housing for very small square footage, without any land (and usually, without it being a single home)
9. the ignorance of sooo many of the people that live there (and this is in all races, not just one)
10. the gangs
There's a reason they call it FILTH-adelphia.

The Bay Area of California is not much better. Litter everywhere, smelly public transportation, overpriced housing, gang violence, long lines everywhere you go (overcrowding), bad public schools, smog, and traffic.

Lest we forget to mention, People ready to run over you for a small patch of freeway or a parking space (if you can find one), car break-ins, house break-ins, muggings, etc.

In the Bay Area (and most of California), English is considered a FOREIGN LANGUAGE.

There is a saying in the bay area: If you haven't had your car broken into at least once, then you haven't been there long.

People visit and see the natural beauty there and they say they want to move. Then, they end up moving away year or two later because they find out it's nothing like what they thought.

It's a great place to be from...and it can be an interesting and fun place to visit if you're on vacation and have lots of free time to roam around (don't have any schedule to keep). But as far as living there and being part of the daily grind, forget it.

Most of what's there can either be found elsewhere (nice weather in winter, nice beaches, variety of good food, entertainment, outdoor recreation...) or simply enjoyed on a vacation every now and then (such as a cable car ride, Dim Sum for Sunday Brunch, Zachary's Pizza , the views from atop Twin Peaks and Grizzly Peak, or walking across the Golden Gate).

I agree with you. After not having been to LV in almost 25 years, since moving to Utah, I've been to LV twice just to go to Fry's Electronics. I was surprised how much Vegas is now a mini-version of LA. No longer a nice little "oasis" in the desert.

And I didn't even go to the strip, just got off the freeway at Fry's and got back on...both times. Really overdone there with all those big casinos and they are still building more. Bad traffic, bad smog and homeless people begging on the corners (and/or jaywalking).

Ummm...nope, no desire to go there again.
