Don't make fun of Chicago! I figured it out since the Tjuana reference is a common joke. It's one of the most beautiful and vibrant cities in the world. The lakefront attracts people to live there.

this thread is killing me - hysterical.

i nominate Jessup, GA. I've never laid eyes on the town - didn't have to, the smell alone nearly killed me. Woke me up from a deep sleep on an Amtrak to FL - I thought there were rotting bodies under my seat. To the conductor's credit - he did warn us.

And I grew up in the "smelly" part of NJ! NJ's industrial smell had NOTHING on this hellhole.

Des Moines Iowa. I'd venture to say much if not all of the midwest.

hostility, meanness, rudeness, & an overall "in-yer-face" attitude, isn't what I'd consider a good place to live...

of all the places I've lived, it's also (in my opinion AND experience) the most dangerous

Interesting! I have been told these things before about Hawaii, along with the famous "Kill Haole Day", but found them so hard to believe. I mean, one always hears that Hawaii is paradise.

LOL! Maybe it was dish-water because whoever prepared it was too tired to make real coffee?

This is the location of the Infamous Mississippi Delta region (along with the likewise named Arkansas Delta and Louisiana Delta). I can't even begin to list all the statistics related to poverty, illegitimacy, poor education, and so forth - so I'll just say this: I perfectly admire one scholar's description of the region as "a rural ghetto" - all the problems associated with the poor inner city copied-and-pasted to the middle of nowhere. No, worse than that! The URBAN poor have incredible opportunities compared the Delta's poor.

Job Opportunities in the Delta - Guess?

Schools - most public schools are are the statistical bottom of the barrel. Even the private schools here are average at best.

Race Relations - about what you'd expect for this part of the country. Calling this region "The South Africa of America" would not be far off the mark.

Homophobia - let's just say that you shouldn't expect a PFLAG chapter anywhere around here any time soon

In short, it's obvious that any referecne to progressive ANYTHING is looked at with skepticism, suspicion, or contempt. If you have any values or attitudes that stray even slightly into the liberal end - this is NOT the place to be. The only way to find even slight relief from this oppressive mentality is to drive to the older middle class neighborhoods of Jackson, MS; Little Rock; or Memphis (even these aren't exactly known as progressive cities, but at least they have small islets of openness where you can find progressive-minded people).

Conclusion: The paper statistics are bad enough but my experience tells me that the Lower Mississippi Valley between Natchez and Memphis (a.k.a. "The Delta") is xenophobic, racist, homophibic, and antiprogressive; not to mention closed-minded and open-mouthed. Sorry, that's just my opinion as someone who lived in the Louisiana Delta in my youth.
Not a lot there - nice tourist towns and beautiful battlefield site and beautiful houses in Vicksburg and in Natchez. Tunica was dirt poor until it got the casinos. The Delta is the least developed part of Mississippi but it could be worse.

My vote goes for Waukegan, Illinois to Kenosha, Wisconsin corridor-- industrial plants on ground, huge illegal mexican population, bitter cold, corrupt city government, ugly frozen tundra look, highly overpriced housing and property taxes, chain stores, crappy mall, high gas prices, long long long high traffic commute to Chicago or major city. God beat it with an ugly stick. Saw some stupid sign in Zion, Illinois that had pictures of bee downtown and corny slogan. Zion its a great place to Bee. Yeah a great place to bee cutting your wrists out of depression lol.

Well actually Northern Indiana is bad too -- not only is it ugly, rust belt, Gary Indiana corridor is dangerous, huge factories, cold weather, lack of jobs/long commute. Totally depressing. More legal citizens though. Lower cost of living at least than Waukegan.

While I'm with you on the "Las Vegas is a wasteland" comment, I was surprised to read that you tried to maintain a green lawn in the desert.

This is among the most ignorant threads on this board (and that is saying something).

This is America. Cities have crime, but most of us are not in the areas that have crime, so explaining crime as major issue in your life in the city is laughable at best. Downtowns and other popular areas of most cities are not the crime areas, it's poor neighorhoods.

Most city schools are not good, but most cities have suburbs with good to excellent schools and good to excellent private schools within the city and burbs.
