We’ve officially hit mud season. The snow turned into 4” of thick ice and has now been rapidly melting off and pooling in the ruts in the dirt road. It’s a mess. 2nd worse I’ve seen in 13 years.
And we’re forecast for another Arctic dip and some snow, lol.

Yup! and now March has more days with snow on the ground than November, December, January, and February did.
Here was the scene yesterday. Soil temp was 43.3°. This morning it's dropped to 40.8°
I usually don't do much to the lawn, last year I decided to give it some love and attention, and now it's an addiction with a learning curve. I pretty much concentrate on the front lawn being its the first thing you see, the back 40, not so much, we use it for recreation so it gets used, not abused. On the front lawn I aerated, used a product called Ultra Weed Beater, and in a matter of a few weeks, weed free. From there, kept lawn at about 3 inches (bagged), fertilizer every 4 weeks, at times Fertilizer with weed control. I did try a dose of Ironite with decent results, last weeks of fall as temps dropped, slammed it with Fertilizer, mild winter, my lawn is still the greenest in the neighborhood. I'm thinking dethatch and aerate early spring.
Do you even have thatch? I rarely see it in cool season grass lawns.
Still - the best time to aerate - is in fall - before you over seed in late September/early October.
Aerating in spring will cause weeds in your lawn.
Every soil has pounds of dormant weed seeds -usually liking warm soil of the summer - providing them with light when aerating - will germinate them easily.
As you wound your lawn by aerating -the cool season grasses can not repair itself and outcompete the warm season weeds - crabgrass, dandelions, others
Quick update: Mid 50s today feels like it did in February...Finally. Huh? lol
Poor mans mulch? Whatever you call it, it works! Cardboard keeps weeds down and helps improve drainage after decomposing. Worms love it too.
Also, I only need to control weeds for 6 months and by time this breaks down its Fall.
My Petunias haven't emerged yet. I always forget how long something takes. More 4 OClocks emerged with my soil mix but notice the growth difference with the Jiffy seed starting mix.
88% on the Dr Martin Carrot Red. 2 seeds per cell. The Dr Martin Top Left germinated yesterday. 1 of them popped up
