There is a problem for people who are in the vulnerable population but depending right now on unemployment.

I was selfishly hoping the federal government would give us yet another stimulus check. I suppose it could still happen, but if states are starting to slowly open up again, it seems less likely.

States are opening not because they think it could be safe but because they are probably bankrupt if the current revenue/cost situation continues for much longer. Texas is already reeling between the double whammy of extraction industry revenue loss plus sales tax revenue loss.

Well of course, isn't that what the whole world is doing? We aren't safe until there is a vaccine, but (realistically) nobody can wait that long.

I honestly think he was throwing a bone to the far right wing dogs barking. Reality is that 25% capacity means it’s cheaper to just stay closed (or takeout only, for restaurants) for a few more weeks. Not even counting the businesses that don’t feel safe opening right now and want someone else to test the waters.

I do agree with his slow & measured approach to reopening. Hope everyone doesn’t go out and go crazy May 1 so we *can* add some more on May 18th, and some more on June 1, and so forth.

Yes, but other places - like New Zealand - are reopening after they’ve beaten the virus. Southern states are just saying f-it at near peak levels and opening. Slightly different approach.

Only solution is herd immunity.

No one is suggesting lockdown until vaccine (at least no one rational). But there are specific milestones in terms of new cases and such, which are supposed to be met before re-opening. Those have not been met in Texas. We are re-opening so the governor can tell people he gave them the option to work. What I worry about is the number of stupid people who will say “governor says we can re-open, let’s go back to business as usual”.

I noticed a lot more traffic out and about this evening when I dropped off some things for my folks. Not sure if people were being more lax due to the governor's announcement or just a coincidence.
