Nothing like this though. I had one day below zero during the "polar vortex" last year. I've had at least four this month. The duration and persistence of these low temps has been amazing.

I don't think we'll get this year after year, but there are other (equally rare) precedents that don't involve January, and not necessarily Feb. 1934 nor going back from there into the 1800s. December 1989 (which I remember) is one. Another (before my time) is March 1960. I had started to think that whether man-made or otherwise we weren't going to see a month like this in our lifetime, that something has changed, but this shows it can happen. Maybe it will be another 20 years, maybe it will be just 2 or 3.

Some shattered records today....BDR's is really telling:

PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE NEW YORK NY

...PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT...

THE FOLLOWING LOW TEMPERATURE RECORDS WERE SET THIS MORNING:

NEWARK.......4. THIS BREAKS THE OLD RECORD OF 6 SET IN 1934.
BRIDGEPORT...0. THIS BREAKS THE OLD RECORD OF 12 SET IN 1968.
LAGUARDIA....6. THIS BREAKS THE OLD RECORD OF 16 SET IN 1968.
KENNEDY......7. THIS BREAKS THE OLD RECORD OF 14 SET IN 1968.
ISLIP........3. THIS BREAKS THE OLD RECORD OF 17 SET IN 2011 AND
IN PREVIOUS YEARS.

Before this year the most snow on ground for last week of February was in 2003 with 14". That spring ended up 8th coldest.

Before this month, Coldest February on record was 1978 at the coast (BDR). That spring ended up 5th coldest. Here's how March 1978 looked. Funny how we moderated after the 1st week. Similar to whats being shown on the models now.

So don't worry, 40s and 50s will be here soon. Maybe another 2-4 weeks?

Euro once showed rain. GFS shows snow. Few updates had cloudy. I think a storm is happening Monday. Just not sure what. Getting to that time of year when it could be tough calling it all snow. Euro trended colder (as has most storms lately) Models don't factor in snowpack. I think we get snow Monday and Rain mid week. Ugh. Here comes the slop, mud and refreeze periods.

Would you believe Atlanta and northern Georgia are getting 1-6" of snow Wednesday? NWS Atlanta says some SREF Plume members shows even more. And It's been snowing in North Carolina all day.

A snow storm on a deep snowpack heading into the Second week of. March makes me very nervous about flooding inSouthern NH, and East/Cental Mass because a rapid thaw is more and more likely as March progresses and a Cold Feb makes ice Jams a distint possibility all over New England and NY because of very thick River ice.
The only "blessing" is a 27-35f ocean on 2 sides could spare us from a quick warm up
