Raleigh had something similar in the 1970's, but it was underneath the Cameron Village shopping center and not downtown:

The Village Subway

The Village Subway, also commonly known as Raleigh Underground, was an underground entertainment district located underneath the Cameron Village shopping center in Raleigh, North Carolina. During the 1970s and 1980s, this underground network contained nightclubs, restaurants, commercial shops, and an arcade. The Village Subway, opened in 1972, was shut down in 1984 due to concerns about the fire code, drug use and customer safety.

Unground Atlanta isn't what it used to be. Once the developer is done it won't be anything like it used to be. Just another open air mall from the renderings I've seen. Hopefully Columbia can do something more authentic.

Welcome back! It's nice to see (read?) so many people that are in love with this city. So many people complain, but there really is a lot to love! Hope your move goes well!

Default New Holiday Inn Downtown

The Champaneri brothers who recently opened the Aloft hotel in the Vista have announced the acquisition of a 10-story downtown office building that will be converted into a 90-room Holiday Inn.

Its amazing how following student housing boom... its now hotels that are booming around downtown.> Still hoping for more stores and market rate apartments/condos to encourage more full time residents in the future. The current trend seems to follow that narrative..

This is good, and kind of reminds me of hotels in Manhattan that are tall and skinny. A little disappointing in the brand choice though.

One another note, the old Holiday Inn North is becoming a Delta Hotels By Marriott. http://deltahotels.marriott.com/?sci...4-d8ee45173bfa

Wow we’re actually getting a brand of hotel before anyone’s else does, that’s unheard of.

The more people we get downtown 24/7, the more retail, restaurants, etc. will follow. This is great news.

Agree! I am a big proponent of the County selling their courthouse on Main Street because it will open up an opportunity like Charleston had with the Omni in the late 80's that changed the course of the city forever.

Where did you find the picture of the proposed Holiday Inn... I am still holding out hope it will be a Kimpton or Hotel Indigo.
