Agree, a practical approach is needed. People that are paying downtown rent should not need to worry about being harassed by homeless people on a daily basis. We need to be sympathetic to the homeless, but at the same time challenge them to improve their situation, at least for those that can. Sitting on the sidewalk, panhandling should not be tolerated, its being lazy.

For what it's worth, I've never felt unsafe in Public Square. Only once did I truly steer clear of anybody (a shirtless, shoeless man going on about religious stuff). But I haven't lived down there, so I have far less experience to draw from.

More often it's just an annoyance to be asked for food or money (particularly when they won't accept food). Honestly I would be more annoyed by the "leaning posts" and other uninviting/hostile architecture that Sherwin Williams wants to put out.

Good move adding all of the windows on the Chagrin side of the building. The bakery's brick wall was uninviting and made it easy to miss.

Thanks for the link. Hails from GLBC and Goldhorn, so should be of good quality. Hope he does a pilsener or lager regularly.

This is great news, thanks for the info.

Separately (from the article…), I was not aware Craft Collective was a sister establishment to Bottlehouse Brewing.

Cleveland State University unveils plans for $650M renovation of downtown campus.

https://www.cleveland19.com/2022/11/...wntown-campus/

Among other things…

<This plan would feature new housing, athletic facilities, and recreation facilities for the area North of Chester Ave, between East 18th street and I-90. “A signature element of the new residential and entertainment neighborhood is a new proposed multi-purpose arena that would replace the university’s venerable Wolstein Arena. The 5,000 to 7,000 seat arena will be home to CSU basketball, concerts and other events. It could also house learning spaces for complementary academic programs like sport and entertainment management”. This would take the current Wolstein arena and transform it into a 800,000 square foot mixed-use development>

Timeline TBD.

I think it's a massive mistake to scrap the Wolstein Center arena without extraordinarily careful consideration. It's a great arena and the City of Cleveland and Greater Cleveland Sports Commission should get involved and see if there isn't a way to save it, even if CSU wants to build a smaller arena for its sports teams. As somebody who has visited the Palestra in Philadelphia several times for basketball, I hate the idea of demolishing Wolstein as it could be invaluable in a few decades, when I still expect the population of Cleveland to explode due to climate change.

Can't somebody take it over from CSU, even if someone has to pay something for the arena to enable CSU to find replacement land for its campus? Has CSU really maximized the potential for hosting non-athletic events at Wolstein? I wonder if Dan Gilbert would take it over under a contractual obligation not to demolish it with Cleveland or CSU retaining ownership, as clearly his firm has expertise at bringing events to Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse and by eliminating the conflict of interest, Rocket Mortgage management might be able to profitably use Wolstein as a site for smaller events? Could Playhouse Square figure out a way to save it? All possibilities should be explored before the Wolstein arena is lost forever.

Nice update from NEOtrans on Sherwin Williams new office building downtown.
https://neo-trans.blog/2022/11/22/sh...o-750-million/
Cost increases due to equal opportunity compliance. Perhaps. It always rubs me the wrong way when multi billion dollar corporations blame regulations or EO laws for cost increases, i.e. why our quarterly numbers aren't up to Wall St. expectations.

Nonetheless, the downtown tower and R&D campus are coming along.

Wanted to share a lot of things going on in Collinwood. If you've been in the area you know the E 185th street rethink is well underway, we've mentioned the trailer park purchase by the land conservancy, and the conneciton of Euclid Creek to Euclid Beach. All those on their own are huge deals, but there is a lot more happening while that all goes on. People might be starting to figure out the potential here.

E185
- The old Grovewood Tavern/Bistro 185 has been bought and personally I've noticed people in there doing work for many months now. Suspicions have been confirmed, it will be a restaurant/bar called the Charter soon. https://www.clevescene.com/food-drin...house-40887730
- (Technically Euclid but same difference tbh) The large restaurant space on 185 between Meredith and Pasnow is also undergoing extensive rennovation. Next year this will be the Hero Bar (https://www.instagram.com/theherobar/?hl=en) and Villains Coffe and Cafe (https://www.instagram.com/villainsohio/?hl=en)

Waterloo
- Doinks Burger Joint will be setting up permanent shop at 15519 Waterloo Rd (the Gold Building on the corner of 156 and Waterloo). This was a burger pop up that would float around the area prior. They are opening Doinks Burger Joint and Seltzer Bar, if you want to support the effort, see here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects...RLErIvF2aCRPS8
- R&D Sausage is under new ownership and it appears the new owner will have new ideas and is passionate about the industry and the neighborhood (https://www.clevescene.com/food-drin...nwood-40763446)

I certainly agree with Colin Brown's take on the neighborhood. People can continue to overlook or write off Collinwood to their own loss.
Quote:
“I just see this neighborhood teetertottering on the precipice of being the next hot neighborhood in the city,” Brown states. “It’s safe, it’s quiet, there are beach-lined streets that are well-lit and well-taken care with well-maintained properties. If you’re an artist, if you’re in a creative space, if you’re in a culinary space – these passion-driven economies – I think this neighborhood is ripe.”
I'm sure this is just the beginning of new moves in the neighborhood.
