You're right, Shaker Lakes are smaller, but one thing to consider is that Shaker's parks are within walking or easy biking distance while pretty much the only way to access the North Chagrin Reservation is by car...and it's only few minutes longer to drive from Shaker Heights to the North Chagrin Reservation than it is to get there from Mayfield Heights.

There is a bike path if you live in Mayfield village that takes you to North Chagrin. Its only 5 mins walk. I believe willoughby hills /willoughby provides comparable access.

If you live in North side of Mayfield Heights you can walk(10-20 mins) and bike(5-10 Mins) to North Chagrin.

Personally If I I am looking for urban area/ diversity I would go with Downtown or University circle. That is the most happening diverse place in cleveland.

If you want the area with the lower taxes outside areas like Willoughby or Mayfield Heights/Mayfield Village will work.(Close to North Chagrin)
If you want the best schools go to Solon. Its students get most of the highest scores.(Close to South Chagrin)
