Somewhere in your incoherent rambling, did it ever occur to you that LINative may be much older than the hipsters that mostly occupy the areas around downtown Brooklyn today? When you ask a 20 year old in Crown Heights about "downtown", you might have to clarify, but if youre older, say 40s, 50s, even 60s, and you talk about going "downtown", 10/10 times its Lower Manhattan.

My family came Upstate from Brooklyn. The strong identity of the borough has always been there, and IMO no stronger then than it is today. Possibly even stronger today I would argue.

Downtown Brooklyn was likely in better shape 50 years ago, 100 years much more so. It slowly lost ground to Manhattan with the advent of the subway, then with a general postwar decline of much of Brooklyn it became grittier and lower end.

Exactly. While to someone from Astoria or middle village it may be a foreign concept there is more than one downtown in NYC and that's one of many reasons why defining NYC's downtown as downtown manhattan is wrong and misleading.

Downtown Manhattan is where the term originated in the early 1800s. Everything in the city went from there. Even for all downtowns across the country thereafter.

Um, I lived in Lefferts Gardens, Brooklyn from 2005-2011.

Do you think this naming convention is still valid 200 years later? Downtown Manhattan is only downtown manhattan by name as Midtown is more densely populated and contains a larger business district than downtown manhattan. The farms above 14th street are mostly gone, you know... Lol
