It seems like the name Cherokee vs Grand Cherokee is a bigger issue for this vehicle than styling. I guess people get confused easily.

The old Cherokee as well as the Liberty that came after it were body on frame construction. This new Cherokee is unibody construction and similar in size with the RAV4 and CRV which are its direct competitors. Its a front wheel drive platform with optional AWD just like its competitors.

The name is a bit confusing, but the styling is way worse. It's trying to have angular yet soft, flowing lines at the same time. The roof-line looks awful and the grille is a travesty. This is reallybad.

No they wernt, Cherokee, Grand Cherokee and the Liberty where all uni body. All three where RWD, with available 4wd, or in the case of the some Grand Cherokee's AWD. I don't see any difference between this new Cherokee and the Patriot. Both are car based, fwd, with available awd. I cant see this having any success off road.

Yup.

Apparently, they'll be making a "trail rated" version though.

Just be aware the JK/JKU have water leak issues from the top that they can't seem to fix. If you don't care about that, enjoy!

Oh....and a poopy minivan engine.

Yup, the big shift is that the new Liberty will be FWD/AWD rather than RWD/AWD. They've been unibody since they went from a full-sized to compact 30 years ago. I like the styling of the new GC, not so hot on the looks of the new Cherokee but it's better to have a polarizing design that some people like and a lot hate. That's something Chrysler knows very, very well. The polarizing looks of the RAM and 300 were huge successes. I don't care for either, although I think the Charger is one of the best looking sedans on the road.
