Good thing those factors discourage crime as well.

Perhaps some people that use CTA need protection on their travels to or from the CTA. A nurse coming home after a night shift, for example.

They don't. But if you think a principled gun battle in a crowded space is better than a one-sided stick-up, then, well, good luck with that.

the gang bangers are already possessing guns and so they are already doing concealed and carry.

not sure what effect this will have on crime since they legally will be able to conceal and carry.

Huh? You think gang members are going to sign up for the 16 hours of training, get fingerprinted and pay the $150 fee to do something they already do illegally? Because gang members follow the rules, right?

Yes, because there will be OK Corral shootouts on buses and trains every day if there's no ban on law-abiding persons carrying handguns on them.

The only practical effect of this prohibition will be to effectively eliminate the ability of those without the means to get around by other means to lawfully carry.

I was waiting for someone to mention that just passing CC does not mean that everyone can carry. Besides the $150 for the permit, it will cost somewhere around $200-300 for the 16 hr. course before you can even apply for the permit. Not everybody will be willing to put out that kind of coin.

That's not what she was saying. She was pointing out that gang members already conceal and carry, and are most usually the perpetrators and victims of gun crime, so legalizing conceal and carry won't have much effect on crime in terms of deterrence.

I have to agree with this. The fact that gang members carry guns has done NOTHING to prevent them from being victims. If anything, it has exacerbated the situation because there is more exchange of gun fire.

I think there could be an impact on the robbery of innocent people if it is assumed that shopkeepers will have guns on them, but most of our gun violence in Chicago is gang-related volleys of gunfire.

Wow, lots of discussion here. I don't mean to get this into a guns vs no guns debate, thats another argument. I, personally, would feel safer alone in a new city having never lived in large urban environment if I knew I could carry a concealed firearm. I'm not a small guy or a woman, probably not a typical mugging target or what have you, but I would certainly prefer to have the protection regardless. I'm not one to look at statistics without delving deeper. In other words, I know most of the violence in Chicago is isolated in the "bad" areas on the South side where I wouldn't live, and mostly between gangs, drug deals gone wrong, etc., but I have a job that will require travel to a client site, and if that site happens to be in a less than ideal area, I would like to be protected.

So basically, everyone is thinking that eventually, including the upcoming ruling, there will be put into play enough restrictions that carrying a gun legally in Chicago will be difficult or banished? That is sort of disappointing. I guess there is always knives...

No, maybe i worded that wrong.

I mean to say that gang bangers are already concealing weapons, so with the new law, if we are allowed to conceal and carry weapons, the gang bangers are going to be protected.
