The Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation bought that building and is remodeling it with their offices on the top floors and commercial space available on the ground level. This has been a much anticipated project in the city, with many different plans over the years to repurpose the building which sat vacant.
The library project is taking shape. Steel beams are up, and the building is starting to take form. This will be a very nice addition to downtown. It's investments like this, the Atlas building (Quarrier St.) and the B&B Loans building (Summers St.) that will help spark other renovation and investment downtown.
On another note, Elk City is on the verge of becoming the go to destination in the city. It seems like there's always a new business about to open, and the vibe over there is splendid. I wish some new middle class housing would start to spring up over there.

I am quite a fan although it took me a while as a born and bred Charlestonian to get used to the 'Elk City' name- Have to say I really like it and am acclimated now although a few of my friends who are life long West Siders won't call it that. Surely to god they can't condemn some of those old and seemingly abandoned houses over near where Maverick gymnastics (am I dating myself?) and houses along Indiana avenue and build some loft style housing.

Indiana Ave would be the perfect location for some new apartments. Maybe those old warehouses along Watts St. (behind Rite Aid building) could be re-purposed into artisan studios or some kind of entrepreneur hub. It would be nice to see the old Rite Aid building either utilized or be torn down and the land re-used.
It still irks me that the city allowed Family Dollar to not only tear down that old church, but build a god awful metal building in what could/should have been a prime spot. They at least should have made them adhere to some architectural standards before plopping down one of their generic stores. Heck, it's not even one of their nicer designs. It's one they'd build in the middle of nowhere, and they allowed FD to be the first impression people have of Charleston when they get off the Washington St. exit ramp.
Slack Plaza is finally going to be remodeled after years of talking! Ground will be broken next month, and the plans include green space, new stage and seating area, and even a small ice rink for the winter months. It should be finished by October.
After years of talk, Slack Plaza is about to finally be renovated. They are currently working on the new KRT transit area now, further down Laidley st. They believe that is will all be finished up by the Fall.
Little improvements at a time are happening in that section of downtown, like the library renovation and the renovation of the B&B Loans building.
